[Class 18.] A box, carton or like container or a cover therefor is made by moving sheet or strip material to an assembly station by a conveyer and bringing a box blank into registering adhesive engagement with the material while on the conveyer at the assembly station and thereafter moving the assembled box blank and sheet or strip material from the assembly station to a box-forming station ; the sheet or strip material may form box covering or wrapper elements or tabbing elements or both and they may be moved in groups or in aligned pairs to the assembly station and the box blanks may be formed from strip material or delivered from stacks and may be in one piece or three pieces. As shown in Fig. 1, strip material 1 from a roll R is cut and scored to form box blanks B which are deposited one by one upon, and in registering engagement with, an adhesively-coated wrapper or cover W at the assembly station A to which the wrapper has been conveyed by a suction conveyer 5 from a stack S ; tabs t cut from strips T may be applied to each wrapper as it passes to the assembly station. As the box blank B is cut from the strip 1, a suction plate 6 engages it, moves it past sliding plates 7, 8, which bend the side panels of the blank over the plate 6, and deposits it on the wrapper with its bottom panel B<1> in adhesive engagement therewith and the assembly is then carried by the conveyer to the box-forming station where the box is completed ; the side panels B<2> of the blank may be pressed into adhesive engagement with the wrapper before the assembly leaves the conveyer which preferably carries a number of wrappers and assemblies and is moved intermittently in timed relation with the movements of the reciprocating suction plate 6. When the box is formed from a three-piece blank, the piece forming the bottom and sides of the box is moved by the suction plate 6 past bending plates and is deposited on the wrapper on the conveyer 5 and the pieces forming the ends of the box are delivered at the box-forming station to the form block of the box-forming machine which may be that described in Specification 406,307. When the wrapper is a composite one, a pair of side sections is taken by the conveyer to the assembly station where the box blank is deposited on the wrapper sections ; the assembly is then moved on to separate wrapper end sections or a panel comprising bottom and end sections on another conveyer and carried thereby to the boxforming station ; the side sections of the wrapper may be provided with tabs. When the box blank is provided with tabbing strips only, the stayed box from the box-forming machine may be covered by a wrapper applied in the usual manner. The box may be provided with a flanged or extension bottom in which case the extension bottom is fed past adhesive-applying rollers to the assembly station into the path of the descending box blank which carries it on to the wrapper on the conveyer ; or the extension bottom may be deposited on the wrapper before it arrives at the assembly station. The box blanks may be cut from composite material formed of two or more laminations.
