[Class 103 (v).] In an automatic coupling for railway vehicles of the 1 ind in which a transversely sliding bolt 4, Fig. 5, in each head is adapted to be moved by a guide surface 2<a> on the other head into engagement with a wedge-shaped recess 3<a> on the latter, the bolts 4 are locked in coupling position by means of longitudinally moving slides 5 actuated by springs 7 and adapted to enter slots o in the bolts 4, the slides being operated for release by one or other of two double-nosed cams 6 coacting with slots 5a and lugs 5b on the slides. The rear ends 5d of the slides are thickened to perform a double function, that is, in the coupled position, to engage with grooves 4<a> in the bolts 4 to prevent displacement thereof, and, in the uncoupled position, to engage the rear edges of the bolts and so maintain the slides 5 in a retracted position with the springs 7 compressed. Actuation of the cams 6 is effected by a chain 21, Fig. 2, connected to a lever 8 on a cam shaft 9, the lever being fitted with a pivoted tappet 10 which is adapted to drop behind a projection 2b on the opposed coupler-head and so maintain the lever 8 and cams 6 in the unlocked position when once moved there. Draw-gear ; couplings, convertible. In the transition period, when couplings of the kind described secured to the vehicle frame are being substituted for the ordinary screw couplings, the coupling may be temporarily supported on the draw-hook as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by means of a pair of parallel pivoted links 19 having lugs 19<a> that are engaged by a bow 18 pivoted at 17 on bent links 16 mounted on the draw-hook. Springs 12 bearing against a fixed support 14 normally serve to swing the links 16 downwardly so that a cross-piece 16<a> rests on the shank of the draw-hook, with the links 19 maintained at a small inclination to the horizontal. At their outer ends the links 19 have additional projections 19b abutting against the coupler-head 1 whereby the latter is permitted to pivot upwardly to give the flexibility necessary to effect a coupling with the opposed coupler-head, the links 19 being allowed a downward movement against the effort of the springs 12. By raising the bow 18, the links 19 are released and with the couplerhead drop to a vertical position when the draw-hook is to receive the chain of the non- automatic coupling.
