[Class 40 (iv).] A code-translating switch in a registertranslator may control two different translated codes at a single setting, the codes corresponding either to different routes to the same exchange or to routes to different exchanges. In the first case, further wipers for controlling the transmission of an alternative code are connected up in later-positions of the outputcontrol switch when the normal code results in an all-trunks-busy signal. In the second case, the discrimination between the two codes is effected in accordance with which of two (odd and even) A-digits effects the seizure of the register-translator by the A-digit switch. If the A-digit is odd, a relay in the registertranslator is operated to switch over from one test bank of the code-translating switch to another, and from one bank of the outputcontrol switch to another in which the twelve translation-determining wipers of the codetranslating switch are connected in reverse order. Thus, for example, for the same position of the translating switch, the first five wipers may be used for an exchange having a first digit 3 and the remaining seven (or less) for another exchange having a first digit 4. The invention is described with reference to a register-translator identical with that described in Specifications 411,456 and 411,463. For changing a translation without taking any of the register-translators out of service, an early position, e.g. the first, in the code-translating switch may be temporarily used for the exchange concerned, the switch being caused to stop in this position by means of a connection over a plug or the like to the test bank, and the translation being then changed at leisure after which the plug is removed. An arrangement for ensuring release of the register-translator without interference comprises a quick-releasing relay in the test-in circuit which normally energizes over off-normal contacts of all the register-translator switches and then locks up independently of these in series with a slowrelease relay controlling release.
