[Class 87 (ii).] In machines for cutting plastic material by one or more wires 11, particularly for cutting clay for bricks, and having a scraper 19 provided for the wire or for each wire or for selected wires, the scraper is rotatably mounted to move in a curved path during cleaning. The material may be cut by forcing the wires through it or by forcing a slab of the material through fixed wires. In this case the wires 11 are secured to hooks 13, 17 adjustable in slots in cross-bars 14, 18 in a frame mounted on a table 10. The wires may be inclined upwards towards the material and the scraper is adapted to clean those parts of the wires at and slightly above the table level. The scrapers 19 may be bifurcated so as to engage the wire on two sides and may be mounted on a rotatable rod 20 adapted to be rocked by hand or automatically from a pusher 12 which feeds the material through the wires. The rod 20 may be circumferentially grooved to receive the wires and it may also have two diametrically opposed axial grooves for receiving bars carrying the scrapers. The spacing of the wires is adjustable and the carrier bars may be replaceable by other bars having differently spaced scrapers. The circumferential grooves may be at standard intervals corresponding to the different spacings. The rod 20 may be connected to the pusher 12 through an arm 22, lost-motion slot 24 and an arm 25 pivoted to a casing 28 of a pawl-andratchet control device mounted on the rod 20. The pawl is a plunger 32, Fig. 4, having a bevelled end aadpted to engage a ratchet 26 keyed to the rod. The plunger may be held in two opposed positions and in a third at right-angles to these by a pin 38 engaging slots 36, 37 in the flap top of the casing. In the first two positions, the rod 20 is rocked during either forward movement only or backward movement only of the pusher 12, the bevel slipping over the ratchet during one direction, and in the third position the rod is rocked whatever the direction of movement.
