Abstract
409,479. Ladders. ROWE, W. S., Crofton Hurst Cottage, Town Court Lane, Orpington, Kent. Feb. 13, 1933, No. 4366. [Class 20 (ii).] A loft-ladder is hinged to the edge of a loft opening and is adapted to pass through the opening, the hinge axis being fixed at about the middle of the ladder so that it is substantially balanced in its stored position. As shown, the ladder, which is formed in sliding sections 10, 11, has a support 19 adjustably fixed to about the centre of the upper ladder section and this support is hinged at 21 to a block 22 which itself is hinged at 23 to the floor joist 17, the ladder being pivoted during raising, first about the axis 21 and then about the axis 23. Sufficient room is provided between the under surface of the ladder in the stored position and the joists to allow a sliding cover 26 to be slid over the floor opening. The upper section of the ladder may terminate at the hinging axis and the other sections be so arranged that they overlap the top of the upper section and thus provide a substantially balanced structure when collapsed. The ladder may be directly hinged to the floor joist.
