Abstract

409,414. Feeding webs. JAMES, H. V., Cintra, Watford Road, Radlett, Hertfordshire. Nov. 9, 1932, No. 31675. [Class 100 (i).] In a magazine reel stand for use with printing machines and having an electric motor for consecutively bringing the reels into splicing and paying-out positions, the motor iscontrolled by a switch device which is electrically operated by the interception of a ray of light or energy which normally actuates a photo-electric cell or similar ray-operated de vice, and is positionec transversely of the patt of the moving reel close tc the expiring web of the ree in use, the interception of the ray taking place as the replenishing reel comes intc position for the splice-up The reel stand carries a three armed spider 4 which supports the reels a, b, c and when it is desired to unite the expiring web a<1> to the web reel b, the reel stand motor is energized to cause the reel b and web a<1> to approach each other. The armature circuit of the motor includes a switch which is normally maintained closed by a relay controlled by the current from a photo-electric cell 6 upon which is projected a ray of light passing transversely to the direction of motion of the replenishing reel b and close to the web a'. The armature circuit remains completed until the reel b intercepts the ray, when the reel is stopped in a position suitable for splice-up. After the splice, the motor is controlled in the usual manner by an additional switch device until the reel c is united to the running web from the reel b. Specifications 336,256, [Class 100 (i)], and 374,484 are referred to.
