Abstract
409,333. Liquid - fuel furnaces. RUSSELL, R. H., Rockefeller Building, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Sept. 27, 1932, No. 26789. [Class 51 (i).] An emulsion of oil and water is atomized in a combustion chamber the walls of which are adapted to radiate heat to the atomized emulsion as it enters the chamber. In the boiler furnace shown in Fig. 3, atomizers 59 deliver into combustion chambers provided with a perforated partition wall 81. The side walls of the combustion chamber are provided with projecting bricks (not shown) and the roof with perforated bricks 70 which, as shown in Fig. 6, support projecting elements 71 adapted to become incandescent and radiate heat to the atomized fuel and apparatus heated. The emulsion is made in apparatus, shown in Fig. 7, comprising a mixing-chamber 28 and rolling- chamber 45 provided with jackets 29, 50 respectively for the circulation of heating fluid. A rotary shaft 27 extends through the two chambers. The fuel and water in the desired proportions enter the mixing-chamber through passages 37, 38 and are subjected to the action of agitating arms on the driving shaft 27 and on a shaft 40 driven by the motion of the fluid. The fluid enters the rolling-chamber through a passage 52 and has access to an annular chamber 54 external to the chamber 53 containing planetary rollers surrounding the shaft 27 and through which the fluid passes to the exit 57 and outlet pipe 58 leading to the atomizers.
