Abstract

408,193. Treating refuse; manures. BOHON, E., 29, Rue de Nora, Enghien les Bains, Seine-et-Oise, France. June 27, 1932, No. 18172. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 28, 1932]. [Class 111.] House refuse before conversion into fertiliser is sterilized by the addition of a disinfectant and heat treatment at a temperature of 100‹ to 200‹ C. With apparatus as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the refuse, mixed with disinfectant such as hypochlorite of lime, potassium permanganate or quicklime, is charged into wagons 7, having lattice or perforated walls, which move on rails through closed chambers 1, 8 successively. Superheated steam is supplied to the chambers 1 through a pipe 9 from a boiler 10, from which also air or hot gas is supplied through a pipe 11 to the chambers 8. Greasy condensation liquors separating in the chambers 1 are passed to a reservoir 12. A fan 13 draws the hot gas from the chambers 8 and returns it to the ashpit of the boiler. After leaving the chambers 8 the wagons are tipped into a ditch 15 from which the refuse is lifted by a bucket conveyer 16 to a classifying drum 17. From hoppers 18, 19, 20 below the drum 17 the refuse is passed by belt conveyers 21 to crushing apparatus 22. With the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 the process of treatment is a dry one. The refuse mixed with disinfectant is fed by a conveyer 44, crusher 45 and hopper 46' to a rotary sterilizing cylinder 27, heated by furnace 26. After treatment it is passed through a screen and disintegrator as with the other apparatus. Gas drawn from the cylinder 27 by a fan 40 may be passed through a cyclone separator 41. To permit of incineration of the refuse, a burner arranged near the end of the cylinder 27 is supplied with pulverized coal or liquid fuel from a tank 42. Combustible portions of the refuse may be used for heating the boiler 10 and in the furnace 26.
