Abstract

Wood is preserved and furs and textiles are proofed against micro-organisms such as fungi by the application of a non-dyeing thiazole derivative carrying an acidic or basic saltforming group or of a salt, ester, ether, or anhydro compound of such a thiazole derivative. The active agent may be applied in the form of an aqueous or oily solution or emulsion containing not more than 1 per cent of the agent and containing also from 1/4 to 1/2 per cent of a spreader such as fish oil soap or a sulphonated animal, vegetable or mineral oil, or other wetting or sticking agent. The thiazole derivatives may carry the groups - SH,-OH,-S-CH2-COOH, or amino or substituted amino groups; and salts of these with hydrochloric, sulphuric or other inorganic or organic acids, or salts with alkalies, ammonia, heavy metals such as copper, mercury zinc, or with organic bases, may be used. Typical compounds referred to are pseudo-thiohydantoin, 2, 4-diketotetra-hydrothiazole, rhodanin, 4 - methyl - 2 - aminothiazole, 2 - amino - benzthiazole, 2 - hydroxybenzthiazole, 2 mercapto-benzthiazole, 2-amino-a - naphthathiazole, 6 - ethoxy - 2 aminobenzthiazole, 4 - methyl - 2 - aminobenzthiazole, 6 - chloro - 2 - aminobenzthiazole, 2 - 5 - diaminobenzthiazole, and 6 - hydroxy - 2 - aminobenzthiazole. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also the subject-matter of Specification 407,708, is not limited to the use of non-dyeing compounds, refers to the use of gum, gelatinous material or a caseinate as a spreader, and to the use of the compounds for killing insects or fungi on living plants, for destroying house flies, and for moth-proofing furs and the like, and includes 2-benzthiazylthioglycollic acid as an example. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
