407,330. Spring hammers. MEISSNER, F. E., 36, Avenue de la RochetaillÚe, St.- Etienne, Loire, France. Aug. 2, 1932, No. 17220/33. Divided application. [Class 124.] Spring hammer comprises a box 7 guided by surfaces 9 in the front part 8 of the casing and reciprocated by a crank 5 driven by a flexible shaft through gearing 2, 3. A ram 21 is mounted between springs 18, 19 in the box 7 ; an inwardly turned sleeve 13 on the casing is divided into four bars 24 which pass through the flange of the ram to guide the latter ; beads 29 on the ram minimise friction with the box 7 and exclude dirt. A tool 27 is removably mounted in the sleeve 13. In order to eliminate recoil, the following relation between the elastic and kinematic characteristics of the hammer pasts and the rebound ratio is satisfied, viz.:- where # is the rebound ratio of the ram on the tool, obtained by experiment, r is the radius of the crank, xa is the stroke of the ram between its neutral position at no-load and its position at the moment of impact with the tool, # is the angular velocity of the crank, and # is the angular speed of an imaginary point moving along an imaginary circumference so that its projection on a straight line would have the same vibratory movement as the free end of the spring means. # is equal to #K/m where K is the constant of the elastic system, i.e. the force necessary to move the ram through unit distance against the resistance of the springs, and m being the effective mass of the parts participating in the oscillation. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 391,099.
