Abstract

407,030. Statistical machines. THOMAS, A., 11, Sandy Lane South, Wallington, and BLAMEY, R. C. E., 33, Purley Park Road, Purley, both in Surrey. Sept. 6, 1932, No. 24853. [Class 106 (i).] Total and subtotal taking.-A tabulating machine includes toothed adding wheels adapted to be engaged with toothed printing elements by normal total-taking mechanism and to be zeroized to transfer their total to the printing elements, and a cyclic control device (such as described in Specification 328,319, [Class 106 (i)]), which initiates the following operations after a predetermined number of cycles (1) total-taking, and (2) total is retained by disconnecting adding wheels and their drive after adding wheels have been zeroized but before printing elements have commenced to be zeroized so that during the latter zeroization the total is returned to the adding wheels. The invention is particularly applicable to statistical machines as described in Specification 26896/13, [Class 106 (i)], and is described as applied to the machine set out in Specification 405,666. The cyclic control device which initiates total-printing after a predetermined number of machine cycles is as described in Specification 328,319. The cards are grouped into main and sub-groups as in Specification 371,849. The object of the invention is to effect printing at the foot of the record sheet of a progressive total of all the items printed on the sheet since the last total and then carry forward this progressive total and print it at the top of the next sheet upon which the listing of the items is to be continued. On the present drawings, parts which are also in Specification 405,666 are given the same reference numbers as in that Specification. Adding and subtracting mechanism 100, which is as in Specification 405,666 accumulates items and on a sub-group change the total in the registering wheels is transferred to the front printing sectors 2, 3. After the latter are set their adding wheels 151 are enmeshed with them so that when the sectors are reset to zero, the total is transferred to wheels 151. The latter wheels are controlled by a plate 153 and pins 160, 160 on a disc 161 as described in Specification 405,666. If lower pin 160 engages plate 153, wheels 151 are enmeshed with sectors 2 after the latter have been set. If upper pin 160 engages plate 153, wheels 151 are enmeshed with the sectors 2 before the latter commence to move from zero, so that sectors 2 receive the total from wheels' 151 which are arrested at zero by their tens-transfer mechanism. This engagement of pin 160 and plate 153 effects total printing and takes place when a main card-group changes ; a rod 183 being lifted to rock a shaft 178 through linkage 181, 185, 186. The plate 153 is positioned by its lower limb 156: a slot 156 in the latter engages a pin 167 on an arm 168 pivoted at 169 to an arm 170 rigid with the front total shaft 138. Also pivoted at 169 is a bellcrank 171 connected by spring 172 to arm 170 and by spring 173 to arm 168. Stops 174, 175 limit the movement of crank 171 which has a lug 176 engaging a latch 177 on the shaft 178. Arm 168 holds plate 153 in its intermediate position as shown where neither pin 160 nor 160 engages a slot 159 or 157: during this time items are added to the adding wheels at the back of the machine. When a sub-total is taken and the total has to be transferred from the back adding wheels to the adding wheels 151, card feeding ceases, shaft 138 is rocked clockwise, Fig. 1, and arm 170 carries crank 171 bodily to the right ; latch 177 obstructs lug 176 and spring 173 lifts arm 168 so that slot 159 engages pin 160. By this, the wheels 151 engage the sectors 2 after the latter have been set by the back adding wheels, and wheels 151 receive the amount as sectors 2 are reset to zero. To print the total of subtotals transferred in this way to the wheels 151, the latter engage the sectors 2 when the latter are at zero. To do this, when the main group changes, rod 183 rocks shaft 178, latch 177 is removed from lug 176 and when shaft 138 is rocked, arm 168 moves down and pin 160 engages slot 157. Plate 153 engages wheels 151 and sectors 2 with the latter at zero so that as they move forward they receive the setting of the wheels 151 : total-printing occurs and the wheels are disengaged while at zero. The above mechanism is that described in Specification 405,666. In accordance with the present invention to print the total so far accumulated at the bottom of one sheet and at the top of the next, the control device according to Specification 328,319, [Class 106 (i)], is set so that after a predetermined number of operations (which will bring the sheet to its last line) a rod 200 is raised. This actuates a lever 201 pivoted at 202 which actuates bell-crank 181 and rocks shaft 178 to remove lug 177 and effect total-printing as above. But during the return of sectors 2 the gears 151 are held in engagement, to receive the total back again, by the rocking of lever 201. A pin 205 on the latter has moved down and carried with it an arm 206 pivoted at 207 so that a shoulder 217 is brought into the path of pin 218 on arm 218 of a shaft 11 which is rocked at each machine cycle as in the prior Specification. This causes cam 208, to which arm 206 is pivoted, to move to the left about its pivot 209 and raise arm 219. This rocks counterclockwise a shaft 211 having an arm 211, Fig. 2, of which a pin 212 thereby lifts the plate 153 into its intermediate position. Wheels 151 remain enmeshed with sectors 2 and have the total restored to them. The wheels 151 are, however, subsequently disengaged by a catch 213 pivoted to plate 153 at 214 : this catch finally abuts the pin 160 which thus carries plate 153 with it to disengage the wheels 151. The machine is then stopped to insert a new record sheet. A cam 220, Fig. 3, of disc 221 on a shaft 222 continuously rotated, is normally clear of a plunger 223 slidably mounted in the machine frame and pressed to the right, Fig. 3, by a spring. An arm 225 abutting the right hand end of plunger 223 is carried by a shaft 226. A disc 227, geared in the ratio of 1 : 7 to shaft 222 carries seven latches 228 (similar to latches 185 of Specification 371,849) coacting with trip arm 229 rigid with a shaft 230 and a plate 231 with a cam face 232 and an arm 233. Engaging under arm 233 is a lug 234 on lever 235 pivoted at 236 to the end of an arm 237 : the latter is on a shaft 238 operated by an arm 239, Fig. 5, and link 240 from an abutment member 241 (equivalent to member 18 of Specification 328,319) of the cyclic control device. Normally arm 229 trips all latches 228 as disc 227 rotates but when the cyclic control device operates at the end of a predetermined number of machine cycles, link 240 descends and lever 235 is raised bodily so that its bracket 235 235b raises lug 235<c> on arm 229, so that the next latch 228 is not tripped but engages a cam on sleeve 300 : the latter is thereby clutched to the shaft of disc 227 for one revolution and is disengaged next time its latch 228 reaches arm 229. One revolution of sleeve 300 occupies seven machine cycles and during this time, cams on sleeve 300 control the machine. One of these cams, 301, rocks shaft 226 to the left so that plunger 223 is slid to the left to obstruct cam 220 and stop the machine. Two other cams 242 and 243 are on sleeve 300, spaced each side of cam 301. Cam 242 raises arm 245 and rod 200 to engage wheels 151 and sectors 2, 3, Fig. 1, as above described. Cam 301 stops the machine and a new sheet is inserted. The machine is restarted by the starting pedal in the known manner and cam 243 raises the rod 200 once more to effect a second printing of the progressive total on to the top of the new sheet, During the seven cycles the machine is stopped. the card feed is disabled by a cam on sleeve 300. If the operation of the cyclic control device at the end of the sheet coincides with a main group change, the second printing of the total is suppressed by a cam 249 on sleeve 300 coacting with a lever 250 free on shaft 230 and rigid with an arm 250. The lower end of the latter rests against lever 235 below its pivot 236. Lever 250 is normally pulled down on to cam 249 by a spring 250. When arm 250 rides off the high part of cam 249, it rocks counter-clockwise, thus rocking lever 235 counter-clockwise so that nose 235b is removed from under lug 235<c> on arm 229. Thus the second cam 243 has no effect in raising rod 200. A handle 231 on plate 231 also enables cam face 232 to rock lever 235 and remove nose 235b.
