Abstract
406,612. Rotary pumps; stuffing- boxes. WOLSELEY MOTORS (1927), Ltd., and TOWLER, C. 0., Drews Lane, Ward Lane, Birmingham. Oct. 9, 1933, No. 27729. [Classes 110 (ii) and 122 (v).] A gear pump for petrol, or other thin fluids, comprises double-helical gears 14 their teeth having apices leading in the direction of rotation of the gears. The inlet port 15 is formed by ribs narrowing down to the gears. The delivery port 10 leads to a compartment 10<1> and to a carburettor by way of a pipe 20. The gears are each formed of two single helical gears spigoted together and riveted. A pinion 5 on a driving spindle 3 engages an internally-toothed wheel 6. Packing 28 of cork or similar material is pressed against the shafts by metal cups 43 by springs. Leakage along the shaft 3 enters a compartment 26 and is drained away at 27. Bearings 34, 36, are slidable in the casing under the action of springs 32. A spring-loaded byepass valve is forced downwards to uncover a passage leading back to the supply tank, when excessive delivery pressure exists. A priming pipe is provided for filling the delivery chamber before starting the pump. A grease nipple 42 is arranged opposite the spindle 4, which is hollow. Each gear-wheel may be in a single piece.
