Abstract
406,571. Ink-ribbon mechanism. SMITH & CORONA TYPEWRITERS, Inc., L. C., Syracuse, New York, U.S.A. July 24, 1933, No. 20796. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1932. [Class 100 (iv).] Means for supplying ink to a ribbon in a typewriter or printing-machine comprises a pulley which is rotated by contact with one face of the ribbon and drives a member for applying ink to the other face of the ribbon. The means may be employed for applying ink to a conveying-ribbon which is wound on the same spools as the inkribbon proper. The ink-applying member may receive ink from a distributing-roller which is inked by means of a wick dipping into a reservoir. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5, the ink ribbon 49 and an ink-conveying ribbon 50 are attached together at the ends by means of eyelets, and are wound on and off spools 10 provided with feed and reversal mechanism. The ribbon 50 is about half the depth of the ribbon 49 and is arranged over the top half thereof. The ribbon 49 passes through slots 59 in the spool housings, and the vibrator 37. The ribbon 50 passes through slots 61 in the spool housings, along guides 65, and over pulleys 71, 77, 79, the pulley 79 having a friction surface of cork &c. The guides 65 each consist of a pair of superposed channel-plates which are secured by screws 70 to a flange 63 on the top plate 53, the upper channel - plates being readily detachable to permit of insertion of the ribbon. The pulley 79 is arranged opposite a gap between the guides and is mounted on a plate 74 which is secured to bosses 75 on a depression 62 in the top plate. Ink is applied to the middle part of the ribbon 50 by a disc 85, having a bevelled and, preferably, notched periphery. The disc is mounted on a pivoted arm 82 on the plate 74, and is provided with a pinion 86 engaging a pinion 81 on the pulley 79, and a pinion 93 on a distributing-roller 90 mounted on a pivoted arm 87 on the plate 74. A spring 91, connected to the arm 87, maintains the distributing-roller in engagement with the disc, and maintains the disc in contact with the ribbon as it passes over the pulley 79. Ink is applied to the distributing-roller by means of a wick 95 resting on a wick 94 which dips into fluid ink in a reservoir 97 secured beneath the top plate. The wick 95 is carried by a spring- urged pivoted arm 106 on the plate 74. The wick 94 fits closely in a tube 105 on the reservoir. The wick 95 applies a thin film of ink to the distributing-roller, a minute portion of the film being applied by the disc to the ribbon 50, and conveyed thereby to the ribbon 50. The openfronted guides 65 and grooves in the pulleys 77 prevent ink from being rubbed off the ribbon 50.
