Abstract

406,365. Endless-chain conveyers. FARRER, J. O.. 27, Chancery Lane, London.- (Continental Can Co., Inc. ; 100, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.) Aug. 26, 1932, No. 23888. [Class 78 (i).] Can bodies are delivered from a conveyer in batches first to one side and then the other, the batches being numerically determined by stepping mechanism advanced by a slide reciprocated by the bodies as they are about to leave the conveyer. The invention is described as applied to a can-making machine delivering the can bodies B by means of a conveyer 12 to a chute 50 mounted on a rockable shaft 51 and adapted to deliver the bodies to the right, or left as viewed in Fig. 10. On a shaft 76 is mounted an assemblage comprising a grooved cam wheel 78, a gear 84 and a disc 85 provided with a circular slot eccentric to the shaft. As each body B advances it is gripped by a pair of rubber rolls 65 driven by the conveyer through sprocket gearing 68 and engages the upturned end 53<a> of a slide 53 provided with a cam at its other end to reciprocate a pawl 93 driving a ratchet wheel in train with gear 84. As the slide is urged to the left, Fig. 4, by the body a pin 56 on the slide engaging an inclined slot 57 causes the slide to sink below the body, the slide then returning to normal position under spring action to await the succeeding body. The chute spindle 51 is rocked at each count by its cranked end being connected to a block 105 mounted on one limb of a vertically movable yoke 100, the other limb of which has a stud 112 engaging the eccentric slot in disc 85. As the assemblage rotates therefore the yoke is raised (or lowered), but the block 105 is restrained from following the movement by means of a pin 106 engaging one of a pair of concentric grooves in the wheel 78, connected by radial slots. When one of these slots reaches the pin the block is free to move suddenly, up or down, under the action of the compressed spring 109 or 108 and so tilt the chute in the other direction.
