406,276. Strapping bales &c. GRAVES, W. L., 10, Boxgrove Avenue, Guildford, Surrey.-(Signode Steel Strapping Co. ; 2600, North Western Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) July 14, 1932, No. 19920. [Class 45.] Relates to package banding tools for twining metallic binders around packages, securing them and severing them. The device comprises a banding tool of the type set forth in Specification 289,951, [Class 45, Fencing &c.], having supports 6, 7, to rest on the surface of the package, and connected by a frame 5 carrying an eccentric shaft 11 upon which the feed or tensioning wheels 12 are mounted. A frame 14, adapted to be oscillated by the movement of a handle between positions A and B, carries a pawl adapted to engage and actuate the wheels 12. The handle 15 is rigidly retained in alignment with the frame 14 by a clutch which yields to additional pressure when the handle is being moved from position B to position C. This movement causes a link 25 to slide the securing mechanism down the frame 14 to effect a seal. The link 25 is connected to a sliding block 23 having links 22 pivoted to the upper ends of jaw levers 20 pivoted at 21 to the block. The jaws are caused to approach and deform the overlapping portions into a joint. At the same time a blade 30, having a serrated lower edge 39, is moved inwards to score or sever the upper band close to the joint. The blade is mounted on a pivot 32 on a plate 33 moving with the pivot 21 and prevented from rotation by a pin 34. A slot 37 receives a pin 38 on one of the links 22 to turn it into the cutting position simultaneously with the movement of the j aw levers 20. When the band is scored, it is separated by hand from the supply. Specifications 111,919 and 185,677, [both in Class 94 (i), Packing &c.], also are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the device may embody holding means such as are described in Specification 354,831.
