Abstract
405,648. Grinding-tools. POTTER, H. V., and BAKELITE, Ltd., 68, Victoria Street, London. Aug. 6, 1932, No. 22120. [Class 60.] Grinding-tools, for example, wheels, hones, whetstones and abrasive rods and tubes, comprise a laminated structure built up of fibrous sheets in which is embodied a thermosetting resinous material and abrasive grains, the grains, and if desired, the resinous material being embodied in the sheets during their manufacture, and the sheets then being cut to size, moulded, and indurated by heat to form a laminated structure. The sheets, which may be of paper or asbestos in which the grains are embodied may have the resinous material, for example, a reactive phenol-aldehyde resin or urea-formaldehyde or polyhydric-alcohol-polybasic acid condensation products, applied thereto, and sprinkled with additional abrasive grains, the sheets then being cut to size, stacked, pressed and heated. Alternatively the resin is applied to the sheets, which are stored for a short period and then built up to form the tool and pressed between hot platens. In a further form of the process, the grains are moistened with a solvent for the resinous material, and mixed with a potentially reactive resin, the resulting mass being applied to the fibres during formation of the sheets. The sheets are then placed together and cold moulded, the bond being hardened by subsequent heating. The fibres may be wetted with solvent, or with resin in liquid or varnish form, or may be coated with the varnish before placing together. The fibres and/or the grains may be moistened with solvent, resin or varnish before formation of the sheets. According to the Provisional Specification, the abrasive grains and resin may be applied to the manufactured sheets of paper &c. Specifications 166,916, [Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], and 396,858 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) [Group VIII], are referred to.
