405,290. Shoe uppers. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Kahlmeyer, H. ; West Medford, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Aug. 2, 1932, No. 21586. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1931. Drawings to Specification. [Class 17 (ii).] A napped fabric suitable for use in making shoe uppers is sprayed with adhesive so that minute particles of the dry adhesive adhere to the outer end portions only of the nap fibres. Preferably, thermoplastic adhesives, such as paracoumarone resin, gutta siak or colophony are used in solution in carbon tetra-chloride, benzol, or naphtha, or in aqueous emulsion. Small amounts of dye may be added to render the particles distinct and thus ensure adequate coating. Shoo uppers are made by assembling a vamp, for example of leather, with a doubler of the.napped fabric so that its napped surface is in contact with the inner surface of the vamp and applying heat and pressure. A liner of the napped fabric may be similarly secured to the doubler to provide a multi-ply upper.
