Abstract
405,197. Road-surface signs. EXELMANS, M., 11, Rue Chauveau, Neuilly-sur- Seine, France.-(Assignee of Soc. Anon. Holophane; 156, Boulevard Haussmann, Paris.) July 18, 1933, Nos. 20259 and 20260. Convention dates, July 18, 1932 and Feb. 25, 1933. [Class 3 (ii).] A road-surface marking or stud is formed with a stepped head which is adapted to reflect, in the axial direction of the roadway, the light emitted by one or more projectors placed on the side of the road. The reflecting surfaces may be vertical or inclined according to the height of the light source which may be at or above the ground level. According to one construction, the stud b, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a series of superposed parallelopipeds each having vertical reflecting surfaces a which, when the stud is in position, are arranged at an angle of 45‹ to the longitudinal axis of the road. In another construction, Fig. 6, the centre of the stud is curved or domed at d to reflect the sun's rays in the direction of the traffic and in further constructions the horizontal portions of the steps are also rounded for the same purpose. The studs may be rectangular, hexagonal, or of any polygonal shape in plan. In a modification, the head of the stud is of the usual spherical or rounded shape having grooves e, Fig. 13, on one side thereof to provide the steps and vertical reflecting surfaces. In a further modification, the original surface in which the steps are cut is circular in plan and has the contour shown on the left-hand side of the sectional elevation shown in Fig. 16.
