Abstract

404,948. Sound and like records. MILLER, J. A., 4627, 193rd Street, Flushing, New York, U.S.A. July 23, 1932, No. 20854. [Class 40 (ii).] A record of sound and other vibrations from which reproduction or projection can be effected by optical means is made by recording as a track cut in a transparent carrier and subsequently treating the track so that its transparency is different from that of the carrier and varies in accordance with the vibrations recorded. The track may be cut by a stylus as a zig-zag or as a hill-and-dale groove of uniform width in a transparent disc or a film of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane " coated with a waterproof layer such as wax, and is subsequently coloured or blackened as by filling in with translucent material or treating with Indian ink or dye. A record so made may be used directly for reproduction by optical means. Fig. 1 shows a strip record with a hill-and-dale groove filled with translucent material. Fig. 3 shows a record cut with a zig-zag trace 5 which is subsequently sprayed with Indian ink.
