Abstract

In the manufacture of metallic make-and-break contacts made of tungsten and adapted for ignition systems in motor vehicles, the material is treated so as to increase the size of the surface granules or to reduce the amount of amorphous material between the granules, a single crystal or large granule in the limit, being employed as the contact. Such single crystal contacts may be obtained by crystal growth around a single crystal wire so as to form a slug or bar which is cut into individual contact points, the latter being finally mounted on a suitable support, e.g. by copper-brazing in hydrogen. According to one method of reducing the number of granules per unit area a rod or sheet of wrought tungsten is maintained, by electrical heating, under non-oxidizing conditions, e.g. in vacuo or in an atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, or argon, at a temperature slightly less than its melting-point for a short period of time and, before exposure to the air, is allowed to cool rapidly to a temperature at which serious oxidation on exposure to the air will not occur.
