Abstract
402,887. Screwing die-heads. HERBERT, SIR A., Dunley Manor, near Whitchurch, Hampshire, DRANE, H. A., 77, Northfield Road, Stoke, and MALLINSON, H., 33, Christchurch Road, Radford, both in Coventry. July 30, 1932, No. 21538. [Class 83 (iii).] In a screwing die-head wherein the diameter of cut is adjusted by rotation of a cam-sleeve and opening and closing is effected by axial movement of the sleeve, the rotational movement is effected by means of a worm rotatable in a collar splined to the sleeve and engaging worm-teeth on the die-head body. The tangential chasers 11 are secured to pivoted carriers 12 biassed to the open position by radial springs 16 and adjusted to the cutting diameter by rotation of a sleeve 17 having eccentric cam surfaces 20, parallel to the axis of the head, co-acting with lugs 19 on the carriers. This rotation is effected by a worm 22, accessible through a hole in the sleeve 17, which is rotatably mounted in a collar 23 splined to the sleeve and engages teeth 21 on the body 13. Opening of the head during its rotation is effected by axial sliding movement of the sleeve 17 through a yoke engaging a groove 28 in the sleeve and prevented from advancing with the head, towards the close of the screwing operation, by means of a stop on the work-holder or on the machine frame. The edges of the cam surfaces 20 and lugs 19 are bevelled at 29 and 30 to facilitate closing of the head when the sleeve 17 is again held axially whilst the head is being retracted from the work. The sleeve 17 is held axially in the closed position shown by means of a transverse pivoted catch 36 pressed outwardly by a spring to cause its outer bevelled surface to engage a similar surface on a recess 38 in the sleeve, the action being such that when the sleeve has been moved rearwardly by the yoke, the catch is depressed out of the recess 38 and the sleeve is then free to be moved rapidly by axially arranged springs in the collar 23 engaging a rear flange 32 on the sleeve. Axial movement of the sleeve in the closing direction is limited by the flange 32 and in the opening direction by a radial screw therein engaging an axial slot in the collar 23. Radial movement of the chasers is limited by pins 30a on the body 13.
