[C.ass 131.] Apparatus for waving the hair comprises a tubular perforated heater, a tubular perforated presser adapted to be pressed against the heater to clamp a lock of hair therebetween, and means for drawing steam through the heater, the hair, and the presser in series. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2, the apparatus comprises a series of cylindrical heaters 2 between which are arranged reciprocating pressers 6, the heaters 2 being each provided with an internal partition 3 and perforations 4, and the pressers 6 being provided with concave operating faces 7 and perforations 9 to coact with the heaters. The heaters 2 are carried by a member 11 and are supplied with steam from a boiler 17 through a conduit 15, provided with a superheater 16, and a rotary valve 12 provided with perforations 13, 14. The valve 12 is oscillated, to admit steam alternately to the right and left hand compartments of the heaters, by a reciprocating slide 24 carrying a cam 23 acting on a shaft 21 mounted on the valve spindle 20. The slide 24 is provided with a slotted arm 26 engaging a pin 25 on a worm wheel 27 which is actuated by a screw 28 driven, through a clutch 29 and a flexible shaft 31, by a motor 32. The pressers 6 are slidably mounted on a tube 37 connected by a pipe 38 to a suction device 39, and are reciprocated longitudinally by the slide 24 through a rod 33 carrying pins 34 which act upon springs 35 engaging lugs 36 on the pressers. The pressers contain heating resistances 40 and communicate at all times with the tube 37 through apertures 43, 42. The apparatus, with the exception of the motor 32, the suction device 39, and the boiler 17, is mounted on a hand-manipulated casing which is provided with a series of hollow perforated teeth adapted to lie between the heaters and the scalp, air being drawn through the teeth by the suction device 39 for the purpose of cooling the scalp. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, a pair of pressers 6 actuated by levers 57 coact with a single heater 49. Steam is supplied to the heater 49 through a conduit 15 and an internal nozzle, and the pressers are connected to the suction device through a tube 54 and a conduit 38. The heater 49 is rotated to wind the hair thereon by a flexible shaft and gearing 53.
