Abstract
402,020. Vehicle undercarriages. KELLETT, W. P., 4501, Delafield Avenue, Fieldston New York, U.S.A. July 8, 1933, No. 19432. [Classes 103 (vi) and 108 (ii).] In a transport vehicle of the kind in which the body or load receiving platform is cushioned for longitudinal movement relative to the undercarriage or chassis, e.g. as described in Specification 390,431, the longitudinal movements of the platform &c. in starting and stopping and due to the recoil of the cushioning springs are braked, preferably by the provision of interacting friction surfaces on the platform and undercarriage respectively. According to the construction shown the undercarriage comprises longitudinal sills each consisting of two channel members 2, 3, Fig. 5, space a small distance apart and connected at intervals by brackets 4, which carry supporting rollers 11 for the load platform and are provided on the top with friction surfaces 8. Fitted to the under side of the platform to coact with the rollers 11 and surfaces 8 are cam blocks 15 and adjacent friction surfaces 17. In the normal position of the platform the lowest points of the blocks 15 rest upon the rollers 11 and the friction surfaces 8, 17 are out of contact with each other. When any displacement of the platform occurs against the action of the spring buffers 20, Fig. 2, which are fitted under the platform as described in Specification 390,431, the platform gradually descends, and the friction braking elements come into operation. Rubber strips 18, 19 disposed beneath the blocks 15 and friction elements 17 ensure an even support of the platform on the rollers and that all the surfaces 8, 17 come into engagement, while at the same time they cause the braking effort to increase with the platform displacement. Since the springs 20 have ultimately to raise the platform in restoring it to its normal position, 'undue recoil jolts and hunting are prevented.
