Abstract

401,189. Cigar - making machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(International Cigar Machinery Co. ; 5520, 2nd Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.). April 21, 1933. No. 11734. [Class 130.] Two or more bunch end shaping devices, each having shaping jaws 64, 65 and an actuating member 69 for opening and closing the jaws, are mounted on a support 62 rotatable in steps to bring the shaping devices in succession to a bunchreceiving position A, Fig. 3, at which the member 69 is operated to close the shaping jaws on a cigar bunch. As shown, the support 62 carries two shaping devices and is rotated through 180‹, to bring each device to positions A, B in turn, by means of a shaft 102 driven through bevel gearing 100, 101 from a Geneva wheel 98, which is actuated by an arm 95 on a shaft 94 driven by a sprocket chain 92. A roller 96 on the arm 95 engages with the tracks 97 of the wheel 98. The bunches are brought to the position C by gripper fingers 85a, 85b on a transfer arm 85, Fig. 5, and a stop screw 110 on the arm 85 engages and slightly depresses a spring-controlled rod 111 on a projecting arm of the finger 85a, so that the bunch is loosely held by the fingers. The bunch is then correctly located, and also moistened at the ends to prevent sticking, by a pair of locating cups 33 carried by slidable shafts 32 and moved into and out of engagement with the ends of the bunch by a cam-actuated rod 48 and levers 49, 54, which are connected by a link 52 carrying a roller mounted in a slot 53 of the lever 54. Each shaft 32 is driven from a gear 25 on a sleeve 16 sliding on a stationary shaft 15 and driven from the main shaft through bevel gearing, a shaft 20, and belt gearing 18. The ;hafts 15 and other parts are supported by brackets 13 and standards 11, 12 on the bed 10. The locating cups 33 are moistened by pads 40 on arms 39 oscillated to and from a water pot 41 by gears 38 engaged by toothed segments 37 actuated by adjustable pushers 56 on the evers 49, 54. The bunch is then engaged between the upwardly moving ja 65 and the swinging jaw 64. rhe jaw 65 is carried by the head 66 of a vertically sliding post 63 actuated by a link 73 pivoted at 74 to the head 66 and at 72 to an arm 71 on a rock shaft 70. In the position shown in Fig. 3, a roller 68 on the arm 69 on the shaft 70 engages a slot in a cam-actuated plunger 67, the movement of which rocks the shaft 70 and effects the upward movement of the jaw 65. The jaw 64 is carried by a bracket 78 pivoted on the support 62 and carrying a roller 77 held by a spring 81 in engagement with a cam 79 adjustably mounted on the shaft 70. The inward movement of the arm 78 causes the face 112 of a cam piece 113 to press igainst a stud 114a carried by the gripper finger 85b, to swing the bunch-carrying unit from the locating position into the path of the rising jaw 65. The bunch, held between the jaws 64, 65, is trimmed by the knives 88 of trimmers 89, 90 pivoted coaxially with the arm 78 and actuated by the cam 79. The gripper fingers 85a, 85b are then released by the return of the transfer arm 85, the finger 85a being opened by the engagement of the stud 115 with an ear 114 on the cam piece 113, and held open by the engagement of a latch 116 with a lock plate 117. During the rotation of the support 62, the jaws 64, 65 are held closed on the bunch by a stationary circular cam rail 107 engaging the roller 68 on the actuating member 69 as soon as it leaves the slot of the plunger 67 and until the jaws return to position A, when the cam 79 allows the bracket 78 to open the jaw 64. The shaped bunch is removed by a transfer device (not shown), and a fresh bunch is delivered by the transfer arm 85.
