Abstract

401,066. Glass manufacture. MOSMIERI, L., 50, Via Montughi, and PINO, G. D., 6, Piazza Strozzi, both in Florence, Italy. Aug. 3, 1932, No. 21819. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1931. [Class 56.] Relates to the method of tempering sheets of glass by means of jets of air, gas, or steam directed on to the surfaces of the sheets while they are hot, the jets being kept in motion in order to secure uniform cooling. According to the present invention, the cooling-device and a sheet of glass are movable relatively to one another in parallel planes, and the cooling-fluid is blown through slots which are inclined to the direction of relative motion of the cooling-device and the sheet. The cooling-device consists of two chambers a mounted parallel with one another on a carriage z which is moved backwards and forwards along a track by means of a crank-disc y and a connecting rod x. The opposing faces of the chambers are formed with a series of slots 2 which are inclined to the direction of movement of the chambers. The sheet p of glass is suspended from a carriage 3 which is movable along a rail 4 leading to the furnace. The chambers are connected to a blower by means of flexible tubes s. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, describes constructions in which the sheet of glass is reciprocated in its own plane and in which the air jets issue from conical nozzles fitted to the air chambers. The blower may be replaced by an aspirator if desired. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
