Abstract

401,039. Gyroscopic apparatus. GRAY, J. G., La Mancha, Victoria Circus, Dowanhill, Glasgow. June 17, 1932, No. 17144. [Class 97 (iii).] In gyroscopic apparatus for demonstrating gyroscopic effects or use as an artificial horizon, the sole support for a gyroscope casing is a peg and cup connection with a shaft capable of rotation in either direction so that the gyro axis tends to set itself parallel to or in line with the shaft. In Fig. 2, the gyro casing 6 has an axial peg 5 resting on a cup 4 carried by a vertical shaft 1 which is rotated through gearing 3 by the reversible motor 2. When the axis 1 rotates in the same direction as the rotor, the axis of the latter is erected into alignment with the shaft 1, and when in the opposite direction, the inclination of the rotor axis to the vertical increases. A second gyro casing 61 may be supported by means of a peg 5 in a cup 4 on the gyro casing 6, and a third gyro casing 6<11> may be similarly supported on casing 6<1>. The casing 6 is eccentrically weighted so that when the rotor axis is inclined the casing is prevented from rotating with the rotor and if it does rotate at small inclinations of the rotor axis an erecting effect is obtained. Alternatively the peg 5 may lie to one side of the rotor axis. In a further alternative erectors of the type described in Specification 130,697, [Class 97 (iii), Thermometers &c.], may be attached to the casing 6. Fig. 4 shows a form of erector in which rods 7 terminating in masses 8 are pivoted at 10 on a plate 9 attached to the casing 6 in a plane at right-angles to the rotor axis. A mirror for use as an artificial horizon may be mounted on the casing 6 or on a plate, which carries rigidly two gyroscopes and a peg resting in a cup on a rotatable shaft. A construction is described in which the frame of a small gyroscope with normally vertical axis is pendulously mounted on a normally horizontal axis in a frame fixed on the casing 6 of the main gyroscope.
