Abstract

400,557. Cooling cylinders. AKTIEBOLAGET SPONTAN, 2, Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm. June 15, 1933, No. 17100. Convention date, June 20, 1932. [Class 7 (ii).] In a closed-circuit system employing lubricating oil or other fluid with a high boiling-point as the coolout, a compact unit comprises inlet and outlet passages 36, 38, by which it is attached to the engine, central chambers 24, 26 for distribution to, and collection from, radiator tubes 28, and a circulating pump 60 and a cooling fan 72 mounted on the same shaft 46 driven by a pulley wheel 76. A ring of diffuser blades 64 is arranged on the delivery side of the pump which is of the centrifugal type, and has impeller blades 62 ; a byepass 66 allows the oil to circulate when thick at starting. Spring- pressed packings 48, 52 are provided for the shaft, which in a radial-cylinder aircraft engine may be the main shaft, the propeller then replacing the cooling fan. The tubes 28 which are circumferentially spaced round a securing shell 22 may comprise two sets 28a, 28b, shaped as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the portions a, b, of circular and involute form respectively, being formed in planes normal to the axis and connected by a circular portion c. The two sets 28a, 28b are bent in opposite directions to cross one another. Alternatively the portions a, b of the tubes of each set may be bent in the same direction as shown in Fig. 11a In either arrangement the tubes may be strengthened by a circumferential band welded to their outer peripheries. They are made from thin steel tubing which is flattened in the direction of the flow before bending. Means for creating turbulence and thus increasing heat flow to the tubes comprise, (1) thin corrugated strips extending through the tubes, or, (2) flattening the tubes at intervals along their length. The cooling system may be combined with the lubricating system as described in Specification 372,793.
