Abstract
Acenaphthalic acid is sulphonated or halogenated or simultaneously nitrated and oxidized. The products so obtained may be subjected to further known reactions. In examples: (1) acenaphthalic acid is mono sulphonated with oleum and the potassium salt of the product, or its anhydride isolated by adding potassium chloride; by oxidation with potassium permanganate and acidification it is converted into mono sulpho-1 : 4 : 5 : 8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid or its anhydride: (2) mono sulpho - 1 : 4 : 5 : 8 - naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid is subjected to fusion with caustic potash to obtain mono hydroxy-1 : 4 : 5 : 8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid: (3) the latter is also obtained from mono sulphoacenaphthalic acid or its anhydride by fusion with caustic potash followed by oxidation with potassium permanganate: (4) acenaphthalic acid is nitrated with a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids and the product which is precipitated, recrystallized from glacial acetic acid to obtain the anhydride of dinitroacenaphthalic acid; by adding water to the mother liquor dinitro-1 : 4 : 5 : 8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid is precipitated, which like the anhydride of dinitroacenaphthalic acid may be reduced to the corresponding amino compound: (5) the hydroxycarboxylic acids obtained according to examples 2 or 3 are alkylated, e.g. with dimethylsulphate: (6) monochloracenaphthalic acid is obtained by chlorinating the parent material with a mixture of phosphorus oxychloride, sulphuryl chloride and phosphorus pentachloride, a little chloroform being added to facilitate stirring: by oxidation with chromic acid anhydride in glacial acetic acid, the anhydride of monochlornaphthalene-1 : 4 : 5 : 8-tetracarboxylic acid is obtained.
