[Class 100 (iii).] In a clamping-device for holding bookkeeping sheets on a base during duplicate writing, which includes a clamping-bar 6, Fig. 1, for the account sheets 7 and an intermittently moving line indicator 9 arranged on the bar 6, the line indicator is loosely coupled by means of a spring-pressed pawl 10 with an actuating rack or rod 12 slidably arranged in the bar 6 so that only a forward movement of the line indicator is possible. The bottom or journal sheet A and the carbon &c. sheet rest against stops 36 on the base 1 and are retained on the latter by springs 37 fixed to a bar 2 hinged at one end 3 and retained at the other end by a spring-pressed pin 4. The bar 2 is provided with lugs a in which the bar 6 is rotatably mounted on a rod 5, the bar 6 being pressed by a torsion spring 20 to clamp the upper or account sheet 7. The bar 6 is marked with divisions corresponding to the divisions on the sheets and is slotted longitudinally at 8 for the reception of the line indicator 9. As shown in Fig. 3, which is a view from želow the bar 6, the indicator 9 is provided with a spring 33 which resists the movement of the latter, and the pawl 10 is engaged by a spring 11 to keep it in contact with the rack 12. The rack 12 is movable longitudinally, by means of a double armed lever 13 in bearings 35 on the bar 6, against the action of a spring 32. The lever 13 is mounted on a pin 34 on a handle 17 on the bar 6 and is slotted at 14 for the reception of a pin 15 on an angled lever 16. The lever 16 is pivoted on the handle 17 and its free end is bent at 21, Fig. 2, to engage an inclined slot 18 in a lever 19 secured to the bar 2. Downward movement of the handle 17 lifts the bar 6 and depresses the lever 16 which, by reason of its engagement with the inclined slot 18, is oscillated about its pivot ; this movement is communicated to the pivoted lever 13 which moves the rack 12 to forward the line indicator a distance of one division. On release of the handle 17 it moves back under the action of the spring 20 to its original position and the lever 16 is again moved to release the rack 12 so that it can move back to its initial position. The pressure of the spring 33 retains the indicator 9 in its new position during the backward movement of the rack 12. The indicator 9 may be moved independently of the rack by means of a handle 22 which on rotation brings the pawl 10 out of engagement with the rack. In a modification the actuating lever of the rack bar is engaged by a pin on an arm which is secured to a spindle on the operating handle. In this case, the indicator is moved by the rotation of the spindle, no movement of the clamping-bar being necessary. In a further modification the rack is provided with a simple projecting handle which is moved along the clamping-bar to forward the indicator.
