2,321,014. Another object is to provide the machine with an improved front-feed paper guide having pressure rolls engaging the platen to feed a paper sheet thereover in rotation of the platen. Otherobjects and advantages will appear hereinaiter.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth in the claims.

The invention is shown as applied to a Monroe listing calculator, such for instance as disclosed in my Patent No. 1,946,572, dated February 13, 1934, modified in accord with the disclosure of my co-pending application for Patent Serial Number 421,803, filed December 5, 1941, patented June. 29, 1943, No. 2,323,205.
In the drawings, the numeral l designates a shiftable carriage having mounted thereon a rotatable platen 2, provided with means to be described ior rotating the same and yieldably retaining the platen in position as rotated.
A front-feed paper guide includes a plurality of separate spring-metal'plates 3. each of which at the lower end thereof i rigidly secured to a transverse shaft 5 having rotary bearings in the carriage end frames and at the upper end there of is provided with a pressure roll 4 engaging the platen ,to feed a paper sheet thereover in rotation of the platen. Means are provided for adjusting said shaft 5 rotatably in its carriage end frame bearingsand for holding the adjustment to vary the pressure of the said rolls 4 upon the platen including identical U-form clamps 6 upon said shaft having bolts 5' upon loosening which said adjustment may be accomplished, whereupon the bolts are tightened to hold the adjustment.
A combined paper hold back and line finder wire 1 extends the full length of the platen and has normal raised position to hold back the paper sheet, manipulable means to be now described being provided as disclosed in my, aforesaid copending application for Patent Serial Number 373,676 with certain structural modifications, for locking said front-feed paper guide in normal position; for disabling said locking means andposition, and for disabling the last named locking means, conjointly restoring the parts to normal position and rendering again effective the first named locking means.
Inasmuch as the paper hold back and line finder Wire and the front-feed paper guide both extend the, full length of the platen, the manipulable means referred to embodies parts protinuous and flexible and is made fast at one end thereof to one of said carrier members by insertion of the knotted end of the wire within a diametric notch of stud. ll of said member; thence extending the full length of the platen to provide one wire stretch, around a pulley l2 of the other carrier member to form a bend in the wire; thence extending reversely the full length of the platen to provide a second wire stretch parallel to and spaced from the first wire stretch, around a pulley l3 of the first named-carrier member to form another bend in the wire; the
wire thence extending rearwardly around a stud whereby manipulation of said upper paper guide will displace both of said evers 8, both carrier members Ill and the paper hold back and line finder wire I therewith. The upper paper guide I5 is spaced rearwardly from the paper hold back and line finder wire I by an interval a', admitting of passage of the paper sheet 8" forwardly of said upper paper guide, through said interval and rearwardly of said wire 1 between the same and the platen 2, thereby providing for full visibility of the upper portion of the paper sheet on and above the printing line,

The body of each of said edge guides has a hooked forward end [8 fitting over the'forward edge portion of said upper paper guide, and rear end slots l9 engaged by angularly bent lugs 10 of the upper end of a depending plate 2|, said lugs resting upon the top surface of the edge guide body and coiled springs .22 connecting the lower end of said depending plate with said forward hooked end I! to yleldabl 'hold the edge guide down to the paper guide.

The paper sheet being thus properly adjusted to the printing line and so held by the normally positioned pressure rolls of the front-feed paper guide, the operator naturally releases his thumb pressure upon the paper sheet and the upper paper guide 85, whereupon the tensioned springs 59' will restore the sectors l8 and the levers 8 with the paper hold-back and line finder wire I as. a unit to normal position, wherein as aforesaid said wire is raised to form. a hold back for the paper sheet.
The upper paper guide l5 may be provided with a tear-off or knife edge for use with a paper tape. 1
The parallel stretches of the paper hold back and line finder wire I are spaced apart similarly tothe printed lines on the paper sheet, for use in aligning to print on the same line in ordinary work and to print on the next line below in ledger and statement work upon a single operation of said manipulable means for displacing said wire downwardly for line finding purposes.

I claim: 1. In a machine of the class described, having line finder device including right and left spaced carrier members andtwo parallel wire stretches mounted upon said carrier members and spaced apart similarly to the printed lines on the paper sheet for use in-aligning to print on the same line in ordinary work and to print on the line next below in ledger and statement, work upon a single operation of said manipulable means ior displacing said device downwardly 101: line finding purposes, said carrier members having adjustable means of connection with said levers for proper positioning oi said wire stretches.
3. In a, machine of the class described havin a rotatable platen, a front-feed paper guide hava rotatable platen, a front teed paper guide havl ing pressure rolls engaging the platen to feed a paper sheet thereover in rotation of the platen,
a combined paper hold back and line ilnde'r'wire device extending the full length of the platen having normal raised position to hold back the paper sheet, and manipulable means for displac ing said device downwardly for line finding pur-. poses and-.ior restoring the same to normal position; said paper hold back and line finder wire device including two parallelwire stretches spaced apart similarly to theprinted lines on the paper sheet-ioruse in aligning to print on the same line in ordinary work and to print on the next line below in ledger and statement work upon a single operation of said means for displacing said device downwardly for line finding'purposes.
2. In a machine of the class described, having a rotatable'platen, a iront feed paper guide hav- 1 ing pressure rolls engaging the platen to feed a paper sheet thereover in rotation of the platen,
