Abstract

Latex, before being brought into contact with fibres which normally coagulate it, such as asbestos, is aggregated. This aggregation connotes the collection of the particles into larger particles whose size may range from 50 to 200 microns, or even to 1/8 millimetre. The preaggregation may be carried out by the addition of definite amounts of hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, aluminium sulphate, sodium silicofluoride, zinc oxide, &c., or an artificial dispersion may be made by redispersing rubber to the size required. Such preaggregated latices cream on standing, if necessary after dilution. It is preferred to use the minimum amount of aggregating agent necessary. A protective agent such as h moglobin which also assists the dispersion of the asbestos, may also be added to the latex before or after aggregation, although this addition is unnecessary when the aggregating agent is a polyvalent metal salt. The hydrogen ion concentration of the latex may be controlled by the choice of aggregating agent or by the addition of other agents and may result in an acid or alkaline-reacting latex. The latex is preferably diluted to a 5-10 per cent rubber content before aggregation, and may be admixed with the asbestos slurry-preferably 5-10 per cent concentration-to give rubber corresponding from a few per cent up to 50 per cent of the weight of the asbestos. The admixture is made while agitating, for example in a paper beater, and the material may then be sheeted or felted &c. Fillers, including finely divided metals, pigments, and compounding agents may be added to the asbestos slurry before admixture of the latex or to the latex to cause preaggregation. The product may be used for the production of asbestos paper, gasket material, fibre board, friction material, such as brake lining, brake blocks, electrical insulating panels, &c. Specification 223,263, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], is referred to.
