Abstract
399,750. Fused silica. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Thomson, E. ; 22, Monument Avenue, Swampscott, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 9, 1933, No. 13484. Convention date, May 10, 1932. [Class 56.] Relates to the method of making a massive article of fused silica, such as a mirror for an astronomical telescope, by depositing fused silica on a base by means of a flame, as described in Specification 296,059, [Class 56, Glass]. According to the present invention, a layer of transparent vitreous silica is deposited on a support, and the rate of deposition is then increased to form a backing of less density on the transparent layer. The support 5, which may have any suitable configuration, consists of a refractory material and is enclosed in a furnace by which it is heated to a temperature of about 1000‹ C. Comminuted silica is projected by a burner 7 against the support until it forms a layer 4 of transparent vitreous silica. After this layer has attained the desired thickness, the rate of feed of the silica to the burner is increased so that a backing 15 is formed which is less dense than the transparent silica and may contain gas bubbles. Finally, the completed composite article is removed from the support and the surface of the layer 4 is ground and polished. Specification 399,749 is referred to.
