399,256. Vehicle wheels. R U D G E - WHITWORTH, Ltd., Crow Lane, Coventry, and WALL, R. C., 40, Painswick Road, Hall Green, Birmingham. May 18, 1932, No. 14120. [Class 144 (i).] Wheel-building apparatus.-In building wirespoked wheels by the method which includes forcible relative axial displacement between the hub and rim, as described in Specification 320,408, [Class 144 (i), Wheels for vehicles], means are provided whereby the built-up wheel may be displaced by actuation of the hubsupporting means alone to a position clear of the rim-supporting means to permit a viewing and, if necessary, a trueing operating. In the apparatus shown, the wheel-hub 33 is supported on a hub 29, the spindle 27 of which is screwed into the outer end of a sleeve 16 adapted to slide, but not rotate, within a sleeve 6 fixed in a boss 3 on the standard 4. For the preliminary spoke-tensioning operation, the wheelrim 9 is clamped by dogs 35 to a disc 8 keyed on the sleeve 6. After this operation, the rim is freed from the dogs 35 and a hand-operated screw 19, engaging a nut 17 in the inner end of the sleeve 16, is actuated to move the wheel into the position shown in Fig. 2 for viewing and, if necessary, trueing. The Figure shows a known testing-apparatus comprising rollers 49, 50 against which the edges of the wheelrim may be rotated. For operating on cycle wheels, the carrier-hub 29 and spindle 27 are replaced by a coned spindle on which the wheel-hub is directly mounted.
