Abstract
399,184. Magazine gramophones. GARRARD ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. and MORTIMER, E. W., Newcastle Street, Swindon. Feb. 23, 1932, No. 6150/33. Divided on 399,172. [Class 40 (ii).] Relates to record-changing devices in magazine gramophones of the kind in which records are held in a pile above the turntable on movable supports, from which they are released singly and allowed to fall on to the turntable. According to the invention, the record supports consist of two or more platforms, each provided with a blade rigidly connected to it and spaced therefrom, the arrangement being such that as a record is released by movement of the platforms the blades intervene to afford temporary support for the remaining records of the pile. In the machine shown, the records are threaded upon a removable extension 1 of the turntable spindle 2, and are supported peripherally by three platforms P, each of which is mounted on a hub 12 attached to a spindle 5a by a pin-andslot connection. The platforms are shaped as shown, one only being shown in plan in Fig. 1, the records normally resting on a portion 7 which is at a greater distance from the spindle than a cut-away portion 8. A knife blade 9 formed in one with the platform, or secured to the spindle, protrudes over the portion 8, the blade being spaced above the platform a distance approximating to the thickness of a record. The platform spindles are connected by bellcrank levers 10 and links 11, so that they may be rotated in unison. When the platforms are thus turned anticlockwise, Fig. 1, through a small angle, the bottom record drops through the clearance provided by the cut-away portions 8. At the same time, the blades 9 move into position to support the remainder of the pile, the supports subsequently being returned to their normal position in which all the unplayed records are held up by the platforms P. Tc provide for records of two different sizes, the platforms P and blades 9 are of duplicate forma. tion, protruding on either side of the spindles 5a to suitably different extents. The pin-andslot connections of the hubs 12 to the spindles allow them to be raised and turned through 180‹ when required, to enable either end of the record supports to be used, according to the size of the records. The rotary movements of the platforms are effected by means of a spring-controlled lever 43, connected to one of the bell-crank levers 10 and co-operating with a cam 42. This cam is mounted on a shaft 23 carrying a cylindrical cam 19, which controls the necessary movements of the pick-up or sound-box carrying arm 13 in the manner described in Specification 399,172. The cycle of operations which occurs when a record is to be changed is initiated when the reproducing needle moves rapidly inwards at the end of the playing of a record, by the mechanism described in the aforesaid Specification, which also describes various other features of the machine herein described. Specification 350,426 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
