Abstract

398,751. Electrolytic cells. KAISSER, K., 124, Nymphenburgerstrasse, .Munich, Germany. March 25, 1933, No. 9065. Convention date, March 26, 1932. [Class 41.] Instead of a diaphragm, a screen having a number of apertures adapted to be wholly or partially closed by deformation of elastic members is employed. The screen may comprise a set of rigid members 7, Fig. 3, between which are mounted rubber tubes 8 threaded on bars 9, the intermediate passages being varied in size bv inflation or deflation of the tubes. In a modification the members 7 are replaced by rods spaced around the tubes, the intermediate spaces being closed on inflation of the tubes by contact of the tubes with the rods and with one another. Electrolysis may be interrupted by complete closure of the passages. The cell shown in Fig. 1 is provided with two screens of the kind shown in Fig. 3 to form a central compartment, the tubes 8 being connected by pipes 10 to a pump. On the outside of the screens baffles 14 are mounted intermeshing with baffles 15 mounted near the electrodes 17. The electrodes consist of bars provided with insulating coatings 18 so that only the rear surface is effective. The cell is provided with a stepped bottom 2. The central compartment is provided with a liquid supply pipe 13 and discharge pipes 4a. Discharge pipes 4 are provided in the outer compartments. The electrode compartments may be surmounted by hoods provided with gas vents. The cell may be used for the purification of water, sea water, or other liquids. Reference is made to the use of a screen comprising a perforated shutter adapted to slide between fixed perforated plates.
