Abstract

Acetylene tetrachloride is prepared from gases containing acetylene, obtained by thermal or electrical treatment of other hydrocarbons or carbonaceous materials, by treating the gases with chlorine at a temperature between 80 DEG C. and the boiling point of acetylene tetrachloride (147 DEG C.). The gases may be treated directly or after enrichment in acetylene. A slight excess of chlorine may be used, and the gases and the chlorine may be preheated, preferably in tubes lined with aluminium. The process may be effected at atmospheric, reduced or raised pressure. In the examples, (1) gases from the treatment of methane in an electric arc are passed with chlorine at 110 DEG C. up an iron reaction tower which is filled with silica bricks and pieces of wrought iron and down which acetylene tetrachloride is trickled; other chlorine carriers such as phosphorus pentachloride or p antimony pentachloride may be used instead of iron; (2) the treatment described in example 1 is applied at about 85 DEG C. to gases from the treatment of methane in an electric arc after enriching the gases in acetylene by treating them with acetone and expelling the absorbed gas.
