[Class 52 (iv).] A machine for supporting a mattress 14 during hand-tufting comprises frames 15, 16 for compressing the mattress, compressor-bars 28 adjustable on the frames to ensure equal spacing of the rows of tufts, and holes or slots 39 in the compressor-bars to locate the penetration points for the tufts. In the machine shown, the frames are movable to compress and release the mattress by four screws 19 connected by chain gear for simultaneous operation either by hand or by a motor 40. Belt driving means, under the control of hand-levers, or of tappets operated by the moving frames, is provided to start, stop and reverse the motion of the screws. The mattress support is mounted to turn in bearings 11 on the base 10 so that tufting can be carried out with the frames in a vertical position. The compressorbars, which slide transversely in the frames, are connected by lazy-tong links 33 for equal spacing adjustments, locking being effected by bolts 36. The slots in the bars are enlarged at positions R, D which permit of arranging the penetration points to suit a.rectangular or diamond-shaped disposition of the tufts.
