Abstract

397,300. Electrolytic cells. POUYAUD, C., Place Ducoderc, Perigueux, Dordogne, France. Aug. 9, 1932, No. 22343. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1931. [Class 41.] In a cell of the filter-press type for the manufacture of chlorine and alkalies the cubic capacity of the anode compartments is made greater than that of the cathode compartments in order to avoid loss of alkali by ionic migration. The anode compartment comprises slate plates I, J, Fig. 1, the latter perforated, bolted to a frame M. The anode consists of graphite blocks L on which a lead block M is cast so as to include conductors N. The block M is jointed to the frame by a sheet of soft rubber. Joints between the slate members are rendered watertight by a semiliquid pitch containing vulcanized rubber in solution. The cathode consists of a perforated steel plate S, Fig. 3, on which are riveted sheet iron bands T. The cathode compartment is completed by a slate plate R and frame Q ; the space within is partially filled by briquettes U of dielectric material. Between the compartments a non- filtering diaphragm of asbestos board impregnated at the edges with a mineral oil is mounted. The anolyte is passed in succession through all the cells in the direction of the current and the catholyte in the opposite direction. The electrolyte after passing through the anode compartments may be cooled in order to lower its conductivity and then passed through the cathode compartments. Auxiliary coolers mav be inserted in the connections between successive cathode compartments. The circulation is regulated in order to control the strength of alkali by raising or lowering the catholyte outlet.
