Abstract
397,120. Screw fans. PITTER, W. C., 59, Bower Hill, Epping, Essex. Feb. 15, 1932, No. 4430. [Class 110 (i).] Means for lifting flying machines or for propelling fluids comprise radial wings or blades freely rotatable about a fixed shaft and mechanically oscillated about pivots in a plane or planes at right-angles to the axis of the fixed shaft. In one form, Figs. 1 and 3, a supporting system for a flying machine comprises a fixed shaft a on which a sleeve b is freely rotatable between thrust bearings d. Sleeve b may be in two parts. Four wings f<1> . . f<4> carried by arms r<1> .. r<4> are hinged to sleeve b by horizontal hinges g<1> .. g<4>. Arms r<2>, r<4> are extended beyond their pivots and cranked at x to clear arms r<1>, r<3>. Connecting rods are articulated to the wing arms at p<1> . . p<4> respectively and to a sleeve i keyed to sleeve b but capable of reciprocating thereon. Sleeve i is reciprocated by connecting-rods m articulated to a powerdriven slider l. The blades may be of the type described in Specification 7745/09, [Class 4, Aeronautics]. In one form, Fig. 4, blade arms r are carried by sockets s in which they are permitted limited rotation but are restrained from axial movement by pin s<1> passing through the blade shafts and sliding in slots s<2>. The blade is floatingly maintained in its normal position by oppositely coiled springs r<6>, r<9>. In a modified blade mounting helical springs connect the socket to radial arms on the blade shaft. In another modified arrangement pairs of blades are mounted on vertically spaced pivots and have their sockets forked to embrace the sleeve b. In this form successive pivots are mutually displaced by 180‹ radially of shaft a and the blades of successive pairs are arranged to be oppositely reciprocated.
