[Class 103 (iv).] A railway wagon of the kind in which the base is formed with a number of inclined hoppers fitted at their lower ends 19 with doors 21 for the discharge of grain or like material is provided above the hoppers with a grid-like floor 35, Fig. 3, which may either constitute a support for ordinary goods or packages or, without modification, may allow free passage of the grain when the latter is being transportea. In the construction shown the hoppers are formed by the association of four longitudinal channel members 10 .. 13 with a series of correspondingly inclined transverse members 14, 15, Fig. 1, the discharge orifices being closed by sliding doors 21, of which two are provided for each hopper. The grid-like floor is preferably made in sections, each of which comprises intersecting strips 36, 37, Fig. 8, with interengaging slots united by welding, or, in a modification, certain of the strips may have key-hole slots. Doors, wagon.-For the loading and unloading of general merchandise sliding doors are provided, each comprising a main plate 44, Fig. 4, reinforced by spaced channel strips 45 and furnished near its vertical edges with doubled strips of rubber 55 which are adapted to contact with angle strips 58, 62 on the frame of the door opening to prevent leakage when grain is being carried. A small hinged door 64, Fig. 1, is preferably fitted above the door 44 for use in loading the wagon with grain. Door-operating appliances.-The two doors 21 associated with each hopper are connected by a link 23, Fig. 1, and the doors of each longitudinal line are operated simultaneously through the medium of a rod 24 associated with a toothed rack 33 actuated by a pinion 32. A number of such pinions, four in the construction shown, are mounted on a transverse shaft 31, Fig. 1, which is rotated from one or both sides of the wagon by a handle 25, transverse shaft 27 and toothed reduction gearing 26, 27a, 29, 30.
