My invention relates to improvements in dumping vehicles and more particularly to mine or similar cars, having a middle longitudinal discharge opening and a shiftable bottom normally closing said opening, said bottom being adapted to be shifted for discharge when the car is at the place for discharge, thereby allowing part of the load at least to discharge downward by gravity from the interior of the car body, and the balance of the load to discharge outside the wheels and also outside the track gauge lines, or outside the wheel gauge lines.
This application is related to my former application Serial No. 424,206, filed January 29, 1930, on Mine-cars, now Patent No. 1,888,135, granted November 15, 1932, but in which the entire load discharged through the central opening.
In the Griffith Patent No. 1,602,015, dated October 5, 1926, the central drop bottom doors are wide enough to discharge both inside and outside of the track gauge lines, but in said car the central doors and the bottom opening were each wider than the track gauge lines, whereas in my present invention the central drop bottom door and central opening are not wider than the track gauge lines, but additional transverse side gates are provided outside of. the track gauge lines in order to control the discharge of the load at such points and to permit it to shed through lateral side openings and outside of the track.
Accordingly it is the object of this invention to give such a vehicle or car greater loading capacity, providing lateral extensions of the body without limiting them to a slant, which would allow the lading to slide into the space between the 'side sills or space controlled by the bottom door or doors, and in which improved vehicle, part of the lading is discharged within the track or wheel gauge lines and part outside of the track or wheel gauge lines by separate controllable doors or gates. The lateral side gates may have the outer portions of the floor slant downward to them to shed the lading laterally outside the track or wheels.

My invention is illustrated in connection with a mine car, but it may be applied to any suitable vehicle, as may be desired. Referring to the drawings, A represents track-rail resting on ties AI and piers A2. A3 is a door raising cam between the rails A.
B represents ordinary car wheels applied to the car axles C extending through bearings fixed to side-sills D of. the car body structure. The ends of these side sills are joined together by transverse end structures DI which are combined end-= sills and bumpers. The side sills and the end structures together form a main frame for the car. The side sills are shown of channel form, but it is to be understood that they may be of any suitable form found desirable. The space between the side sills D and the end structures DI is to be regarded as the central discharge opening, and that opening is normally closed by the shiftable bottom. In the form shown in the drawings, a single door E is used to normally close said opening, which door constitutes the main or middle bottom of the car.
While I have shown only a single door for controlling the central discharge opening, it is to be understood that more than one door may be used for this purpose, if desired. 30
The door E has its forward end hinged to a transverse hinge rod El, and at its rear end the door is provided with a wrist E2, to be engaged by the hook end of a pivoted latch F, which is pivoted at FI to a standard F2, which rises from the upper face of the rear end structure DI and is secured thereto. This latch mechanism is shown as similar to that described in my application Serial No. 424,206, filed January 29, 1930, above referred to, while reference is made to the Hugh W. Sanford Patent No. 1,512,059, dated October 21, 1924, for the single drop bottom door.
The body side structures or extensions are duplicates, and hence a description of one will serve for both. Each such structure has a floor G, the inner edge of which is secured to the upper flange of the adjacent side sill D and extends outwardly and obliquely therefrom, sloping downwardly approximately to the level of the lower edge of said side sill as shown in Fig. 4,
which floor G is fixed and is braced at intervals by gussets GI interposed between said floor and the adjacent side sill D. The opposite ends of the floors G are fixed to end walls G2, which are braced by transverse end-rails G3.
' The car-wheels B are higher than the upper face of the side sills D,'hence the wheels extend through the plane of the body extension floor G, which requires the forming of openings in the floor to receive the wheels. A hood G4 extends over each wheel, and has side flanges G5, resting on and secured to the floor G, while an inner flange G6 is seated on the upper face 7 of the side sill D and is secured thereto.
The hood G4 is closed at the top, and at its inner side; but its outer side is open as shown in Fig. 5 to permit easy removal of the wheel from the axle.
From the outer edge of the floor G, a sidegate H extends upwardly approximately in a vertical plane with its lower edge abutting against the outer edge of the floor G, and the opposite ends of the side gate H have wings HI fixed thereto, and are pivoted to the car body ends G2and end rails G3 as at H2. This serves as a pivotal support for each of the side gates H to allow these gates to be moved upwardly from the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5.
To the upper edge of each side gate H, approximately midway between its ends and on its outer side, is an upwardly directed bracket H3 carrying a roller H4 in position to ride upon a cam I shown in Fig. 1, and which cam is stationary at the side of the track at the tipple or other place for discharge, said cam being in the path of the roller H4 and being twisted or defiected and extended sufiiciently to keep in engagement with said roller, while the latter is being moved upward and sidewise during the upward swinging movement of the side gate H about the pivots H2. It is to be understood that a cam I is provided at each side of the track for engagement by the rollers H4 carried by both of the side gates.
By means of these cams I, the side gates H are caused to swing upwardly sufficiently far to allow the coal or other lading toslide down the floors G for lateral discharge outside of the track gauge lines.
A cam F3 is located beside the track at the tipple in position to be engaged by the arm F for the release of the bottom door E, and preferably the rollers H4 reach the cams I about the same time that the arm F reaches the cam F3 for simultaneous release of the lading both inside and outside of the track gauge lines. It may be founddesirable to have the central door E and the side gates H discharge successively, and the arrangement shown "is merely for purpose of illustration. r 7
'As soon as the'rollers H4 are allowed to move downward from the cams I, the side gates H can move downward by gravity to close the lateral discharge openings at the sides of the car, that movement being on the hinges or pivotal supports H2.. The central door .E' is returned to its closed position by the cam A3 between the track rails afterit is automatically lowered by the latchF. In- Figs. 7 and 8, I have shown a modification wherein the car lading body is rendered substantially wider for increasing the capacity. Side rails J are secured to end rails J I extending about-the ends J2 of the car'body. Side-gates J3 depend from the lower edges of the side-bars J, and are hinged thereto as at J4.
The side-gates J3 are vertically disposed, but have inwardly inclined portions J5 extending obliquely from the lower edges thereof as shown in Fig. 8 in position to engage the outer edges of the downwardly and outwardly inclined floors J 6 which extend from the upper edges of the side sills D. Brackets J! are attached to the lower edges of the gates J3, and are adapted to be en.- gaged by cam rails J8 shown in Fig. 8, which are curved or twisted sufliciently to cause an upward swinging movement of the side gates J3 to release the side gates and to close the same, as described above in connection with the cam rails I. Automatic latches may be provided for holding the side gates J3 normally closed.
The reference in the description and claims to track gauge line and track gauge as applied to a rail car would apply to the wheel gauge line and wheel gauge, in a vehicle not intended to travel on a track.
I claim:
1. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a central discharge door discharging entirely between the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, said central discharge door being hinged about a transverse axis and being arranged for automatic closing by movement of the vehicle with reference to roadway means, means for discharging laterally outside of the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, and means for causing approximately simultaneous discharge from said door and means.
2. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a central drop door discharging entirely between the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, said central drop door being hinged about a transverse axis and being arranged for automatic closing by movement of the vehicle with reference to road- Way means, means located outside the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle for discharging lading, and means for causing approximately simultaneous discharge from said door and means.
3. In a dumping vehicle, the combination with a drop bottom door for discharging entirely between the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, said central drop door being hinged about a transverse axis and being arranged for automatic closing by movement of the vehicle with reference to roadway means, one or more doors or gates for discharging outside of the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, and means for causing approximately simultaneous release of the drop bottom door and the last-mentioned doors or gates, for discharge.
4. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a drop bottom door for discharging entirely between the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, said central drop door being hinged about a transverse axis and being arranged for automatic closing by movement of the vehicle with reference to roadway means, one or more doors or gates disposed outside the wheel gauge lines of the car for discharging lading from the vehicle, and means for causing approximately simultaneous release of the drop bottom door and the lastmentioned doors or gates, for discharge.
5. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of an automatic central drop bottom door discharging entirely between the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, said central drop door being hinged about a transverse axis and being arranged for automatic closing by movement of the vehicle with reference to roadway means, and one or more doors or gates for discharging lading laterally outside of the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, and means for causing approximately simultaneous release of the drop bottom door and the lastmentioned doors or gates, for discharge.
6. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of side sills, supporting means therefor, a body structure carried by the supporting means, a central drop bottom door arranged between the side sills, means for automatically causing a release of said. central door, hingedly supported side gates disposed outside of the side sills for causing lateral discharge from the vehicle, and means associated with the releasing means for the central door'for automatically swinging the side gates to positions for causing lateral discharge of the lading.
7. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a wheel-supported body having a middle dis charge opening, and having a lateral discharge opening, a bottom structure sloping downward from the edge of the middle opening to the lower edge of the lateral opening, said middle and lateral openings being permanently in open communication with the main portion of the body, and doors for closing said openings, the door for closing said middle opening being hinged transversely to the length of the vehicle and being arranged for automatic closing by movement of the vehicle with reference to roadway means.
8. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a wheel-supported body having a middle discharge opening and having lateral discharge openings at opposite sides thereof, bottom structures sloping downward from the edges of the middle opening to the lower edges of the lateral openings,
' said middle and lateral openings being permanently in open communication with the main por tion of the body, and doors for closing said openings the door for closing said middle opening being hinged transversely to the length of the vehicle and being arranged for automatic closing by movement of the vehicle with reference to roadway means.
9. In a four-wheel drop-bottom mine car, the combination of a wheel-supported body having a middle discharge opening and having lateral discharge openings at opposite sides thereof, bottom structures sloping downward from the edges of the middle opening to the lower edges of the lateral openings, said central and lateral openings being permanently in open communication with the main portion of the body, a movable bottom door controlling the middle discharge opening, and shiftable gates controlling the lateral discharge openings, said bottom door and gates being constructed and arranged to open for simultaneous discharge from the middle and lateral openings.
10. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a wheel-supported body having a middle discharge opening and having a lateral discharge opening, a bottom structure sloping downward from the edge of the middle discharge opening to the lateral discharge opening, said bottom structure having one or more recessed hoods therein for receiving the wheels, and doors for controlling said openings.
11. In a four-wheel drop-bottom mine car, the combination of a wheel-supported body having a middle discharge opening and having lateral discharge openings on opposite sides of said middle opening, bottom structures sloping downward from the edges of the middle opening to the bottom edges of the lateral discharge openings, said bottom structure having deeply recessed hoods 13. combination of a wheel-supported body having side sills arranged to form a middle discharge opening therebetween, said body having lateral discharge openings on opposite sides of the middle opening and extending upwardly from points approximately in horizontal alignment with the lower edges of the side sills, bottom structures sloping downward from the upper edges of the side sills to the lower edges of the lateral discharge openings, said bottom structures having deeply recessed hoods therein to receive the car wheels, a movable bottom for controlling the middle opening, and upright side gates for controlling the lateral openings.

In a four-wheel drop-bottom mine car,the combination of a wheel-supported body having side sills arranged to form a middle discharge opening therebetween, said body having lateral discharge openings on opposite sides of the middle opening and extending upwardly from points approximately in horizontal alignment with the lower edges of the side sills, bottom structures sloping downward from the upper edges of the side sills to the lower edges of the lateral discharge openings, said bottom structures having deeply recessed hoods therein to receive the car wheels, a movable bottom for controlling the middle opening, and upright side gates for controlling the lateral openings, said bottom and gates being constructed and arranged to be opened for simultaneous discharge through the middle and lateral openings.

In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a body having side members, wheels and axles supporting said body, the wheels being outside the side members, bottom structures having hoods covering the wheels, said hoods being closed to the interior of the body and open to the exterior thereof, and a tiltable lading section at each side of the body and closing the open sides of the hoods when the lading sections are in normal positions and exposing the open sides of the hoods for accessibility of the wheels when the sections are tilted upward.
16. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a wheel-supported body having lading end sections, and lading side sections forming side dumping doors, each of said side sections having wings at the opposite ends thereof and extending inwardly and overlapping the lading end sections, and means pivoting the wings to the lading end sections for upward swinging movement of the side sections, said body having side discharge openings controlled by the lading side sections.

combination of a wheel-supported body having lading end sections, and lading side sections, each of said side sections having wings at the opposite ends thereof and extending inwardly and overlapping the lading end sections, means pivoting the wings to the lading end sections for upward swinging movement of the side sections, said body having a middle discharge opening, and lateral discharge openings on opposite sides of said middle opening, and a movable bottom controlling said middle discharge opening, said lateral'discharge openings being controlled by the swinging side sections.

of a wheel supported body having lateral discharge openings therein extending approximately from end to end of the car, the lower edges of said openings being spaced inwardly of the upper edges thereof, lading side sections for controlling said openings and having inwardly inclined lower portions arranged to extend to the inwardly spaced lower edges of the openings, and means for hingedly supporting the upper edges of the lading side sections.

In a dumping vehicle of the character described, a body having a central drop bottom door hinged about an axis extending transversely to the length of the vehicle, and one or more side doors or gates for discharging outside said central door, said central and side doors being arranged transversely of the vehicle for discharge thereby of separate horizontally spaced portions of the load.

In a four-wheel rail car of the character described, the combination of a central drop door discharging its lading entirely between the track gauge lines of the car, another door discharging its lading outside the track gauge lines of the car, and automatic means for releasing both doors simultaneously for discharge.

In a four-Wheel rail car of the character described, the combination of a transversely hinged central drop door discharging entirely betweenthe track gauge lines of the car, and means for discharging laterally outside of the track gauge lines of the car, said drop door and discharge means being arranged for separate discharge respectively of central and outward portions of the load.

In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a lading body widerthan the wheel gauge and so arranged that only a portion of the lading can be discharged between the wheel gauge lines while all other portions of the lading are discharged 7 outside the wheel gauge lines, a middle discharge door for discharging entirely between the-wheel gauge lines, and separate means for discharging entirely outside the wheel gauge lines.

In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a lading body wider than the wheel gauge and having side closure walls, a lading carrying bottom discharge door narrower than the wheel gauge and discharging its lading entirely between the wheel gauge lines, lading carrying means extending inwardly from the side closure wall approximately to the upright planes of the longitudinal edges of said bottom discharge door, and said lading carrying means being arranged to discharge lading entirely outside the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle.

In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a central drop door arranged to discharge its lading entirely between the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle and hinged about an axis extending transversely of the length of the vehicle, and another door extending lengthwise approximately throughout the entire length of the vehicle for discharging its lading outside the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle. v

In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a central drop door arranged to discharge its lading entirely between the wheel gauge lines of'the vehicle and hinged about an axis extending transverselyof the length of the vehicle, another door extending lengthwise approximately throughout the entire length of the vehicle for discharging its lading outside the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle, and automatic means for releasing both doors simultaneously for discharge.
27. In a dumping vehicle, the combination of a central drop door arranged to discharge its lad-' ing entirely between the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle and hinged about an axis extending transversely of the length of the vehicle, and means extending lengthwise approximately throughout the entire length of the vehicle for discharging its lading outside the wheel gauge lines of the vehicle.
