[Class 78 (i).] In a conveyer for carrying a series of articles by means of pusher pieces through mechanism where a wrapper is folded around each article to form a U-shaped block-ended package open at the rear end, in order to withdraw the pusher at the limit of its operative path without disturbing the overhanging parts of the wrapper, it is caused to follow a path forming an acute angle with the operative path. Each pusher piece 1 is mounted on a carriage 2 connected by pivoted links 20 with the endless conveyer chains 3 which pass over sprockets 4 .. 7 arranged as shown. The carriage 2 is guided in its operative path by grooved rails 14 engaged by rollers 11, 12, and beyond these rails by extension rails 15 engaged by rollers 13. At the limit of the forward movement, slots 10 in the side-flanges 9 engage a bar 19, so that the movement of the chains 3 around the sprocket 4 causes the carriage to tilt backwardly about the bar 19 before following the downward sloping path. The carriage is guided in the downward and lower paths by rails 21, 22, and is assisted in the upward path by a curved rail 23 engaged by a central roller 18. At the limit of the upward movement, it is tilted slightly by a guide 25 to bring the rollers 13 into engagement with extension rails 16.
