Abstract

395,976. Testing abrasive qualities of materials and testing lubricants. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO., Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. Feb. 9, 1933, No. 3958. Convention date, March 13, 1932. [Class 106 (ii).] A testing-machine has a rotatable test ring 28 'and a pair of levers 30, 33 pivoted one upon the other, the upper lever 30 carrying a test block 41 adapted to make line contact with the test ring 28. The latter, Fig. 2, is clamped by a nut 29 to the tapered portion 27 of an arbor 4 which is driven by pulley 5 and belt 6 and which is supported in roller bearings 13. The upper lever 30 is suitably weighted at 43, Fig. 1, and is fulcrummed on knife edge 31 of lever 33 ; and the fulcrum 35 of the lower lever being exactly beneath knife edge 31. Block 34 has a transverse knife edge 36 resting on block 38 to give universal action. A pointer 44 on lever 33 reads against a scale 45 and lever 33 is so balanced that normally it lies horizontally. As ring 28 rotates, it tends to move test block 28 laterallv and exerts a force on knife edge 31 so that lever 33 is rocked. The weight at end 43 of lever 30 being known, by placing weights at end 43 of lever 33 sufficient to bring it back to the horizontal, the frictional moment is known. Screen 46 normally holds lever 33 horizontal, but is adjusted the necessary amount during a test. Oil is supplied from a pipe 62. To test the qualities of different lubricants, the same test block 41 and the same weight at the end 43 of lever 30 are used and the different lubricants are supplied from pipe 62. In a modification the test block 41, instead of being attached firmly to lever 30 as by wedge 42, Fig. 1, is fastened to a carrier which is pivoted by a knife edge on to the lever 30. A test bearing 47 for ascertaining the abrasive (wearing down) property of the lubricant comprises two cones 48 mounted on a shaft 50 and spaced by a ring 49. Between these cones and cups 53, spaced by ring 54, are roller bearings 55 in cage 56. Engaging over extensions of shaft 50 are slots 57 of two levers 58, pivoted at 59 and weighted at 61. The normal weights of the parts keep the cups 53 in engagement with the test ring 28 driven by shaft 4 as above described. Oil is supplied to bearing 47 by pipe 63. The amount of wear in bearing 47 is ascertained by weighing and measuring the bearing after it has run for a specified time.
