Abstract
395,483. Wrapping -machines. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO., 132, Birnie Avenue, Springfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. May 5, 1932, No. 12968. Convention date, July 13, 1931. [Class 94 (i).] During the folding of the projecting end portions of a wrapper that has been applied around an article, an uncreased flap is formed which is flattened in two or more separate operations by applying pressure to different areas of the flap while sealing liquid is applied to different portions thereof. An article A, Fig. 1, is raised to the level of a table 30 bv plungers 31, 32, carrying with it a wrapper b into a pocket formed by members 33, 34, 35. A plate 36 advances to the right to turn up the rear depending edge c of the wrapper and a tucker 37 carried thereon makes the first end tuck. The article is now moved to position B ; the table 30 turns up the front depending edge d and a rail 38 makes the second end tuck. The end of the packet is now as shown in Fig. 11, owing to the proportion of the size of the members 37, 38 to that of the package, the upper and lower flaps e, f are not creased or flattened, the portions of the end tucks adjacent to these flaps being unconfined. At position C, a sealing liquid is applied to the flaps e, f. Resiliently mounted plates 40, 41, Figs. 4 and 12, slightly flatten the flaps, and a dauber 46 moves to the two positions, shown in broken lines in Fig. 4, to apply the liquid. The dauber comprises a casing or reservoir 54 pivoted to links 47, 53, and terminating in a plate 56 forming the core of a system of wicks 57 extending from the reservoir, which is supplied through a pipe 82. The extent of the exposed surface of wicks is limited by guard-plates. The link 47 is pivoted to a stationary bracket and the link 53 to a vertically reciprocable crosshead 50. A roll 61 on the crosshead engages a groove on the link 47 to cause the dauber to reach into the corner at the base of the flap at each applying stroke and to retract from the package in its travel between the two positions. At position D, Figs. 1 and 19, a plate 67 turns up the flap f against the end of the packet and the rail 38, while a second dauber 80, moving with the plate, applies a second coating of liquid to the flap e and flattens it against a plate 81. The edge 74 of the plate 67 is slanting so that at its lowest position it does not completely release the fold until the packet has been moved to the next position, and also tends to tighten up the overlapping portions of the edges c, d with which it contacts. The article is now passed along between side-plates by the succeeding articles into an oscillating holder 86 which turns it through a right-angle into position on a table 88 in front of a plunger 87. The plunger forces the packet between heating plates 89, adjustably mounted to exert a yielding pressure.
