Abstract

395,394. Liquid and gaseous fuel burners. RICHARDS, D., Woodfield, Luddenden Foot, Yorkshire. Jan. 12, 1932, No. 835. [Class 75 (i).] A liquid or gaseous fuel burner is provided with a single control hand-wheel A the rotation of which regulates simultaneously in the correct proportions the fuel passing from an inlet B<1> in a valve block B to an axial passage b<7> and a tube b<12> terminating in a nozzle K, the primary air passing from a fan through an inlet C<1> on the burner casing C to a sleeve G surrounding the fuel nozzle K, and the secondary air entering a casing O through ports o to mix with the fuel and primary air. The hand-wheel A rotates in a fitting a detachably secured to the block B and is internally threaded to engage a threaded boss D slidably mounted on an extension of a plug b<1> carried in a conical sleeve b<2> fitted within the block B. The boss D is connected by rods b<13> to a plate f<1> which is adjustably secured to a tube F surrounding the tube b<12>. The plate f<1> is connected by a rod e<1> to a valve E sliding over an oil port b<6> leading to the passage b<7> and is formed with lugs interlocking with lugs on the sleeve G. The sleeve G is formed with a ring of ports g<2> registering to an increasing extent as the hand-wheel A is turned to open the oil port b<6> with ports h in a ring H and so regulating the admission of primary air which then passes through ports l in a nozzle L carried by the tube F to mix with and atomize the fuel issuing from the nozzle K. The tube H can be rotated slightly relatively to the tube G by screws engaging a peg h<2> so as to vary the proportion of primary air to fuel. The tube G carries an outer nozzle J the distance of which from the casing O regulates the admission of secondary air through the ports o. The sleeve b<2>, plug b<1> and tubes b<12>, F may be withdrawn from the block B for cleaning by rotating the sleeve b<2> by means of a tommy pin M inserted in recesses m<1> in the fitting a, and the nozzle J and tube G may then be withdrawn from the casing C. The fuel supply may be controlled by a piston-actuated valve B<3> opened against the pressure of a spring by the pressure of the primary air communicated through a pipe C<5>. Figs. 11 and 12 show suitable mechanism for operating the hand-wheel A from a thermostat S arranged in a furnace heated by the burner. When the furnace reaches the limiting temperature a slotted rod r<15> connected to the thermostat rotates a shaft r<10> in a frame r7 by engagement with a projection r<13>. The shaft r<10> carries a toothed sector r<16> gearing with a pinion r<17> secured to a shaft r<11> tending to rotate under the influence of a spring r<11x>. The shaft r<11> carries a toothed sector r<18> gearing with a pinion r<19> which is freely mounted on the shaft r<10> and carries an arm r<20> connected by a Bowden wire r<21> to an arm which is rotatable on the hand-wheel boss a<2> and carries a spring plunger r<28> engaging an adjustable plate on the hand-wheel. The limiting temperature of the furnace may be adjusted by turning a knob r relatively to a graduated dial r<2> on a casing R enclosing the mechanism, the knob r rotating a cam r<5> engaging ribs r<6> on the frame r7 to move the frame in its bearings r<9>.
