Abstract

In a process for producing azo dyes on textile materials (cellulose esters and ethers and animal fibres), wherein the diazo and/or coupling component are fixed in the free state on the material prior to colour formation, the fixation is effected by applying aqueous dispersions or suspensions of the component or components by mechanical impregnation and subjecting the material to a moist heat treatment, e.g. steaming. The fixation and subsequent development may be effected continuously. Components specified are arylamides of aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acids and b -ketocarboxylic acids, phenols, naphthols, oxynaphtho-carbazoles, pyrazolones, N-alkyl anilines, naphthylamines and the components referred to in Specifications 300,929 and 310779, [both in Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]; aminodiphenylamines and amino-arylaminoanthraquinones. The dispersions may be prepared by the usual methods or according to Specifications 219,349, 224,925, 242,393, 242,711, 269,960, 273,819, 273,820, 322,737, and 323,788, [all in Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]. Various methods of applying the process are given and mixed materials containing cellulose esters and ethers may also be treated and any cellulose or regenerated cellulose present may be coloured by suitable processes, e.g. vat dyestuffs may be applied according to Specification 262,506, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]. In examples (1) cellulose acetate is padded with a dispersion of p-aminobenzene-azo-a -naphthylamine, dried, steamed, diazotized and developed with a dispersion of b -oxynaphthoic acid, (2) a woven fabric having a cellulose acetate warp and a viscose weft is padded with a dispersion of aminoazobenzene, steamed, rinsed to clear the viscose, diazotized and coupled with resorcinol; the viscose may then be coloured with a cotton dyestuff, (3) a cellulose acetate fabric is padded with a dispersion containing the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic and 5-nitro-2-toluidine, dried, steamed and developed in a nitrite-acetic acid bath, (4) pastes containing 2 : 5-dichloraniline and diacetoacetyl-o-tolidine, the 2 : 5-dimethoxyanilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and the anilide of 2-oxycarbazole-3-carboxylic acid are applied as in (3), (5) a cellulose acetate fabric is printed with a paste containing 2 - methoxybenzene - azo - a - naphthylamine, padded by means of engraved rollers with a thickened dispersion of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic-anilide, steamed, diazotized and soaped, (6) a cellulose acetate woven fabric is dyed with benzene-azo-benzene-azo-phenol, printed with a dispersion containing 4-amino-4<1>- methoxydiphenylamine and 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid-o-toluidide, dried, steamed, washed and developed by diazotization, (7) a natural silk fabric is padded with a dispersion containing the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and 5-nitro-2-anisidine, dried, steamed and developed.
