Abstract
393,698. High-speed quick-traverse yarn-winding machines. CANNON, J. J., Orson Street Works, North Evington, Leicester. Feb. 11, 1932, No. 4070. [Class 120 (ii).] The frame of a high-speed quick-traverse winding-machine, mainly intended for winding yarn upon cones for use in knitting-machines and the like, is of circular formation around which the spindles or carriers 12 for the cones together with the driving drums 10, traverse guides, and stop-motions are arranged, the traverse being effected by a cam 83 driven by variable speed mechanism, and the driving of the drums, for example, by a pulley 17. The frame comprises upper and lower plates 2, 3 united by tie bars 4 and is rotatable on ball bearings in a bed 8 around a hollow central driving-shaft 5 driven by an electric motor 133 or pulleys 159, 160 through a main shaft 134 and countershaft 138 and bevel gearing 142, 143. The frame may be rotated as desired manually or by power, or it may be slowly and continuously rotated by power. With the described drum-driving means there is a tendency for the frame to revolve slowly. As shown, two tiers of ten winding-units are arranged around the frame a driving-belt 16, Fig. 4, passing around driving- pulleys 15 of the drums 10 and suitable guide pulleys 18 .. 22, and the carriers are mounted on swing brackets 23 pivoted at 24 to arms 26 on frames 27 secured to the tie bars 4. Yarn guides 78, Fig. 5, held close to the drums by guard rods 78a attached to the bearings of the drum-shafts, are carried by flexible steel bars 11 reciprocated vertically by levers 81, 80 from the cam 83, Fig. 2. The cam is designed so that the yarn builds up slightly more at the lower end than at the upper, and is driven at a speed which is automatically varied by an expanding pulley so that it increases and decreases alternately, the period of the variation extending over a number of revolutions of the spindles. As shown in Fig. 2, an expanding pulley 113 constructed as described in Specification 389,251, [Group XXIV], and controlled by shaft 128 within the central hollow shaft 5 operated by a cam 131 driven fr.om the main shaft 134, drives the cam 83 through a countershaft 114 and belts 115, 118. The cones are gripped upon the carriers by means of eccentrically mounted toothed dogs 44, Fig. 10, which when the cone is rotated in the direction of the arrow turn about their pivots and engage the cone. The dogs are mounted in a plane inclined to that of the axis of the carrier so that in gripping the cone they also draw it down upon the carrier. Stops 50a, Fig. 5, are provided on the carrier to engage with a stop pin on a slidable collar 51, or with a notch 49 when the carrier is in inoperative position and so prevent rotation of the carrier when removing or replacing a cone. The carriers may be pivotally mounted, as shown in the lower half of Fig. 5, in hubs 31 about a shaft 33 in the bracket 23 and locked in operative position by a spring pin. An arm 36 carried by the shaft 33 engages a slightly inclined slot 39 in an arm 38 so that as the yarn package grows its surface is maintained parallel with the driving drum. The bracket 23 is provided with a torsion spring 55 to control its movement and with a ratchet sector 57 engaged by a pawl 61 on a slide 59, Fig. 16, in a bracket 58 on the frame 27. The slide 59 is withdrawn to release the pawl 61 to permit the movement of the carrier on to the drum bv means of a lever 66 on a shaft 63 controlled by a handle 64, Figs. 5 and 7. The pawl 61 is released by the engagement of a lever 74 on the lever 66 with a fixed pin 75 and a pin 76 on the pawl. When the slide 59 is withdrawn it is locked by a latch 69 connected by a rod 108 with automatic stopmechanism and is thus withheld when the handle 64 is released while the pawl, by the freeing of the lever 66, re-engages the sector 57. Release of the slide 59 upon operation of the stop mechanism urges the pawl 61 forward by the action of spring 68 and removes the carrier from the drum. The slide 59 is released upon breakage of a yarn by the operation of the latch 69 which is connected by a rod 108 with a lever 107 which is operated, in the case of the upper tier of cones, by a stop-rod 104 and in the case of the lower, by a stop-rod 104a when either is brought into the path of a stop on the lever 81 of the traverse mechanism by detector levers 101 connected to the stop-rods. Electric lamps switched on by the automatic stop-apparatus may be provided to indicate when a carrier is inoperative. The Provisional Specification describes also separate cams for the actuation of each or a group of yarn guides, and the variable driving of the drums instead of or as well as that of the traverse mechanism of the yarn guides.
