Abstract
Manganese ores are calcined, preferably by roasting the dry crushed ore at a temperature of about 600 DEG C. for approximately 15 minutes, prior to flotation or gravity concentration. The calcined ore may be subjected to froth-flotation concentration, using as flotation agent a mixture of fish oil soap and a hydrocarbon, preferably dipentene or sulphurized dipentene. Alternatively the calcined ore may be subjected after grinding and sizing to gravity concentration in jigs or on tables, and the tailings from the gravity concentration may be further concentrated by froth flotation. The preliminary roasting destroys the colloidal slime by dehydration and converts the manganese minerals into oxides.
