Abstract

<PICT:0392904/IV/1> <PICT:0392904/IV/2> <PICT:0392904/IV/3> A yarn or thread particularly an artificial thread of cellulose acetate or other cellulose derivative is passed over absorbent material to which a controlled amount of liquid is supplied under pressure and by which the liquid is transferred to the thread. The liquid may be supplied under a gravity head or by means of a pump. The wick or pad of absorbent material is mounted in a container connected to the source of supply of liquid under pressure and is enclosed except for a gap in which the thread makes contact and through which the liquid is forced to pass. A flat or circular wick or cylindrical pad may be used. The devices may be used for applying oils, water, sizes, dyes, resists, molten waxes, de-electrifying, or other liquids to artificial threads continuously with their production, and after receiving the liquid the threads may be wound by cap-spinning or other twisting and winding devices, or by simple winding devices such as drum, bobbin, or reeling devices. The moistening devices may be used in other twisting or winding operations, or continuously with the consumption of thread in knitting machines particularly seamless hose and other circular knitting machines. They may be used for applying liquids to weft yarn for looms with stationary weft supplies. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, artificial filaments 8 from a dry spinning cell 10 are led in the form of a thread 11 over the moistening device to a godet roller 14 and thence to a winding device. A reservoir 17 is filled to a constant level with the liquid which is to be applied to the threads. Liquid flows from the tank 17 to a header 20 provided with a number of outlet pipes 21 each of which has a valve 22. Bell mouthed U-tubes 23 are placed <PICT:0392904/IV/4> <PICT:0392904/IV/5> <PICT:0392904/IV/6> beneath the outlets 21. The shorter limbs 24 of the tubes 23 bear wick devices at their extremities. The valves 22 on the pipes 21 may be replaced by calibrated plugs 52 as shown in Fig. 3. The supply of liquid is regulated so that there is a constant head of liquid in the long limbs of the U-tubes 23, the pressure from which forces liquid through the wicks to the threads at a constant rate. As shown in Fig. 4, the wick device comprises a cylindrical container 30 within which is a standard 32 terminating in a head 33. A flat wick 34 is doubled over the head 33 and is fed with liquid from the container 30. A cap 35 fits tightly over the wick 34. A groove 37 in the cap 35 exposes a small part of the wick which applies liquids to the thread 11 as it passes through the groove. The container is screwed on to the short limb of the U-tube 24. As shown in Fig. 6, a thimble-shaped porous pad 45 fed with liquid from a chamber 40 is supported by a slotted thimble-like member 44 resting on a washer 43 which is urged upwardly by a spring 41. A cap provided with a slot 49 fits tightly over the pad 45. As shown in Fig. 7, the liquid to be applied to the threads is forced by the gear-pump 55 from a reservoir 53 to a header 56 and through outlet pipes 57 which carry wick devices at their upper extremities. The pipes 57 may be equipped with regulating valves 58 or calibrated plugs 59. Specifications 327,740, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 342,712 are referred to.
