Abstract

392,838. Electrolysis. MENTZEL, A., 2, Nordsternstrasse, Sch÷neberg, Berlin. Nov. 11, 1932, No. 31950. [Class 41.] An apparatus of the kind in which circulation of the electrolyte is effected by the ascent of the gases generated comprises a number of cells e disposed in a row between common circulation passages c, d connected to a gas - separator f situated at such a height above the cell as to ensure effective circulation through all the cells. The connecting passages a, b may be longer than the battery of cells and should be at least half as long. An alternative return pipe bl may be provided. This is employed particularly in the case when the cells are connected to provide, for example, negative poles at the ends and a positive pole at the middle of the battery. The pipe b<1> should contain one or more insulated sections. The battery should be arranged at not less than 5‹ and preferably between 20‹ and 45‹ to the horizontal. The electrodes are disposed transversely to the axis. In a modification the cells are vertically superimposed, the electrodes being parallel to the axis. In a cell for the generation of oxygen and hydrogen, circulating systems as described above are provided for the anolyte and the catholyte, the ascending pipe on the hydrogen being of reduced section in order to preserve pressure equilibrium on both sides of the diaphragm in all cells.
